bike knocking
Hi all, just bought I thunderace this week and after I removed the fuel tank to start a small service I started the bike up to warm the oil up and
noticed a knocking noise.
As far as I can tell using a screw driver held to my ear its coming from the casing behind the alternator? I know there is a chain driven shaft in the
casing, my question is should I be concerned about the knocking and would anyone know the cause and fix?? Bikes on 36K

Presumably the knock wasn't there when you bought it?
Don't know that particular bike but are you sure you used the correct grade of oil and the right quantity?
For it to be deep inside the casing my feeling is that it could be mains or big -ends.
My inclination would be to get your money back if you haven't done many miles since you bought it unless it was a knock-down price.
HTH.
Cheers, Pewe

I didn't notice the knock until I removed the fuel tank to do a service.
The knocking is at the top of the engine in the casing of the alternator shaft.

does the noise go away when you turn the headlight on? It might sound like a stupid question but some Suzukis have alternator rattles that go away
when the alternator is loaded. I know it isn't a suzuki, but...

knocking go off when you raise the revs by 200 or 300 rpm?
Is it not just timing chain on a slow tick-over?
