Getting a JAW to work
Hmm, bought a used jaw (1.03)off a locost chappie a whiel ago, and now I have finally got round to plugging it all in I am getting nowhere
I have an old lappy with a proper serial port, and a "straight" serial cable. But when I try to communicate with the jaw (query device
button), I just get a "System TimeoutException" the same as if the cable is not plugged in
As I am a tech numpty, what do I do next?
And please do not laugh

Have restarted the laptop with it all connected up and power applied to it?

does it need any driver software ??
My laptop had the serila port disabled in windows due to a conflict all sorted now
Life is like a bowl of fruit, funny how all the weird looking ones are left alone

Got the right version of jawedit installed?
haven't been on the 14point7 site for a while till last night...I see things have changed
Is it powering up OK?
(heatsink will get 'kin hot with a lambda sensor plugged in)
Have you tried a volt meter on either of the outputs and gone the lighter test to see if its alive and doing stuff?
Got anything else that is serial you can check the laptop port is actually doing what it should
Not played with JAW for a while and cannot remember if theres much to change settings wise as far as com port/comunication setup goes

OK, have done the first suggestion, connected it all up, the controller display lihts up, and starts at apprx 14 but quicly whizzes up to 34.27 (the
highest reading?)
The lambda sensor gets hot! but the heaksink for the controller stays quite cool, does have a built in fan though.
When I look at the device manager (lappy is on windows me) for the com port 1I am given some setting choices (bits per second:9600, data bits:8,
Parity:none, stop bits:1, Flow control:Xon/Xoff) sound correct??
Trying to think of any other serial devices kicking about......not common these days.

just built a 1.o4 so don't no the 1.03 but it should show afr 34 in fresh air.
i use a usb converter but i think uou could try hardware not xon xoff. 9600 etc souunds good.
there are two types of serial leads one has pins 2 3 turned over don't know which you need, as mine plugs straight in to the converter.
not a lot of help really

I thought (good) lambda sensors were meant to get hot so they work quicker and give the ECU good info before they have to wait to be heated by the
exhaust.

The settings in the device manager shouldn't make any difference, the JAW host software should initialise the serial port correctly. It
wouldn't hurt to set flow control to "None" though, and you can try disabling the FIFO buffers under the "Advanced"
button.
Do you have any phone or PDA software installed that may be grabbing a serial port at boot time?

Indeed, the sensor is hanging off the back of a chair in the house no car attached.
And other software, none I can see. Is there a good way of checking? I'll have a look at the task manager, but as it is a spare it is prettty
clean (unless the kids have been playing )
