Need a new fuel tank

In anticipation for a european run next year, I am going to replace my tank with a bigger one. The current 20ltr one gives me about 100 miles at 70mph, which means i will have to fill up 3 times before I get to dover!!!!

What sort of capacity tank are you guys running?

Can I get a new tank made which is just taller, or is it better to extend it over the top of the diff? I am not really bothered about losing bootspace tbh.

Also, is it worth putting a sump into the bottom of the tank - I am using webers and cannot see me upgrading to injection at any point.

Thanks

Shaun

a small sump would stop the pump sucking air i guess,
my tank's 36ltrs, but i don't see myself going much further than glasgow (30 miles)

Always worth adding a small pot to the bottom of the tank as it prevents too much surge uncovering the outlet, wont help much if you run really low on fuel though.

Mine is 5 gallons there abouts and I managed 150miles before I packed the car up for the winter, no idea whats left in the tank, under a gallon though I suspect!

When I was planning a trip to Europe I looked at fuel stops and it didnt work out too bad. Especially if you carry a 20L can with you. Though not sure what the border guys would say about that?

The westfeilds seams to be just under 35, but thats if you totally empty it, and with it being a pain to fill fully 100miles range is about the norm.

How about 2 tanks use the 1 you have + one over the diff then after the trip you can remove the 2nd tank
PS my tank is over the diff and it holds 35lts

I have just been out and measured the tank I have. Its 21cm wide by 24 cm tall and 72cm long.

I work that out to 36 litres? Thats really strange as I can only put just over 20 litres in before it is full!!!

I managed to make mine to the max available space, while maintaining boot space, (to stow the hood and frame), and managed to get 10 gallons, which at 20 to the gallon gives me around 200 miles. Cheers Ray

Mine holds 40 litres but then again I run a Rover V8 engine...

Actually, on a run of some 140 miles a little while back I averaged 28.6MPG even with some spirited driving and cruising at 70MPH and allegedly beyond (I don't know 'cause my speedo magnets fell off after 13 miles...)

I got my tank made by allyfab.co.uk to my own design including a simple sump and two baffle plates which separate the tank into 3 sections of about equal size with small holes in the baffle plates to allow fuel back through. This also helps to avoid the fuel sloshing side to side when changing direction quickly which can be enough to unsettle the back end on the limit otherwise. Worst case would be when the tank is half full when around 20 Kg's of fuel would slam into the end of the tank like a very large rubber mallet! The sump design is just a 1" deep circular section welded to the bottom of the main tank with three large (20mm ish) holes drilled through the tank into the sump.

The idea of the auxiliary tank isn't a bad one in my opinion and might allow you to use a large ally header tank of something to give you the capacity you need. Obviously you would need a series of breather's and feed pipes arranged and you would need to watch your levels to ensure you can fill the aux tank without overflowing the main tank at the inlet.

For your info, my allyfab tank cost £150 plus £12 P&P but that was 5 years ago or so. Well worth it in my opinion.

Craig.

Mine is 10 gallon. The XJS brochure says that the 3.6 would do 30mpg at around 50 iirc. So if we say the lighter locost does 30mpg, that means i will get 300 miles on a tank. Not sure i beleive the 30mpg though

How long can i resist the temptation to drop a V8 in?

I have a 20 litre tank and a 1700 crossflow. Mine did close to 40 mpg on a run to Cannes a couple of years ago. We made a point of stopping every 2 hours to stretch legs, fill up and have a coffee and there was still juice in the tank. We were taking it fairly steady, about 65mph average.

Joe /\ made me a lovely fuel tank for my Fury. Highly recommended.

Can't recall how big the tank is but it's massive - lasts for ages!
