FAO Flakmonkey - sump issues?

Having got our bellhousing and offered it up i now realise what you meant when you said the ranger sump is very deep!! Not to mention the fact that the bolt pattern does not match the bellhousing.......grrr didnt see that one coming.

Soooo, my preferred route would be to chop pretty much all of the sump out, leaving a decent amount of material including the flanges and weld in a shallow wide box bringing the sump level inline with the bottom of the bellhousing. at the same time drilling/tapping/maybe helicoiling the end flange as required to suit the BH. Question is, going this route, is there any benefit to starting with a FWD sump (apart from the holes), given that I suspect I'd end up carving that to the same degree. Of course internally I would be gating and baffling as required.

Also, on your gates what did you do for 'bearings' as such on the hinge shafts? or did you not bother given that it is immersed in oil anyway and not working very hard. I understand if you dont want to disclose such info as you are marketing your sump design.

Hi Dan,

Both the std fwd and rwd sumps are massivley too deep. The ranger one by about 50mm and the fwd one by about 27mm. They could be chopped, but its a lot of work and they would need extending to get enough oil capacity.

Dont worry about the bellhousing not lining up with the bolt holes though, shouldnt be an issue, my sump doesnt have any bolt holes in it.

Hence why I designed and made one in the end. They are available through 3GE components, either as a weld yourself kit (for about £75 IIRC) or ready to fit.

The max sump depth is 75mm from the flange face.

There are no bearings on the gates, they move freely on the supports. Bearing in mid that the oil level in the duratec is about 8mm from the flange face of the sump, its full to the top pretty much anyway.

As for the sump design, there are plenty of pics on my site (and below). I won't release the drawings, but you will get a good idea from the pics. There is a windage tray inside as well to stop oil sloshing around.

Thanks for your reply, very concise. I would U2U but I cant from the pc i normally use (cant work out why). plus as has been said there may be a few people wondering similar things.

£75 is quite reasonable so something we will consider. It does look a good bit of kit. I do quite fancy having a go myself though.

When you say windage tray - are you referrering to the horizontal plate?
