Bike Engine or the whole bike?
As usual with these situations, every person i speak to is an expert and knows everything however each person contradicts the previous....
I need a bike engine for my MK indy...
Want a R1 or ZX-12R (Not going into which one now)
I Spoke to a guy last night that said i'd be better off buying a whole bike rather than just the engine as that way I would get all the bits
i'd need from the bike and could sell the frame, forks, panels etc on eBay to actually make it cheaper than buying the engine on its own.
Has anyone gone down this route?
If i go to an engine company will they provide all the parts i require with the engine?
Can someone tell me what they paid and where they got it from so i can just do that???
Thanks in advance.

He is the person to talk to.

If you buy the whole bike and strip it down you have access to all the bits from the bike you might possibly need and could indeed flog the bits
afterwards. If you've more time than cash that's a good option.
If you can't be arsed to strip down a whole bike just to extract the engine and a few extra bits (that you could always buy on Ebay etc) and get
involved with flogging bits of old bike, then it's simpler (if perhaps slightly more expensive) to just buy an engine from a breaker.
Other advantage of buying the whole bike is you should be able to hear the engine running (so you can buy it off whoever) whereas if you buy an engine
you're better off buying one from someone who will give you a warantee. Supercheap engines on Ebay are often that cheap for a reason!

Thanks... Wouldnt consider an ebay engine anyway. what components do i need from the bike? is it just the engine with gearbox and loom?

Get the air filter, fuel pump & clocks as well if you can, maybe the battery as well. I got my R1 from Malc with all those bits (except
battery).
Cost is obviously dependent on year & state of engine but Malc seems to be a good straight guy & won't let you down.

buy a whole bike, you'll save the breakers profit and have bits to sell on. I got a hayabusa for £1300 with plenty of bits to sell on, you also
know its a UK bike not a restricted import.

It's important to get the loom, and all fuel/intake bits, with any bike engine.
A whole bike guarantees that.

As a price guide I got a ZX12 with evertything required apart from fuel pump and clocks for £1300. That was a fairly low mileage (2000 ish) A1
model.
I paid about £50 for a pump and another £100 or so for some clocks.
