What are these holes?
OK I've got the 1.8 K series VVC engine to mate up to the type 9 box and on recommendation have got the flywheel from a 1.4 or a 1.6 to put on
it. Where the clutch plate has been engaging(the shiny bit)measures 200mm so I think its a 1.6 flywheel. My question is that on the back of the
flywheel there's a circle of holes with four elongated sections spaced specifically apart. All are connected via a cut out chanel where a sensor
sits as the flywheel goes round. Is this for the rev counter or something else.
There not the holes for balancing the flywheel as these are quite obviously visable.
PS
has anyone ever made an adapter plate to mate the type 9 bellhousing upto a K series engine?
The bellhousings for conversion are quite expensive, so wondered is it could be done via a conversion plate.

They are for the crank position sensor. It lives under the inlet manifold at the back of the cylinder block. the cutouts in the flywheel are the
missing teeth that tell the ecu crankshaft position, There is a picture of my conversion in my archive.

So do flywheels from different models ie i.4, 1.6 and 1.8 have different configurations of the holes and slots. Does this affect which ecu is used.

No it is a security measure to prevent the ringing of stolen cars the flywheel reluctor pattern is unique to each individual engine. The engine ecu
and the security ecu have to be programmed for that engine and each other.

The 1.8 I have has the teeth on the outside of the flywheel and the crank sensor is in the gearbox bellhousing. It would be good if you could keep
yours all original I think.

So putting a different flywheel on messes things up a bit then. Will this make the ecu and key fob and the other bits I have on the wiring loom
useless then, unless I have them reprogrammed?

No I didnt get the flywheel with the engine,would it help If I could find out what pattern it was?

The differences is the reluctor ring pattern cannot normally be detected by eye. The way round it is to get the ecu's security system doctored
how easy this is depends on version of the MEMS the ECU is.

I think you really need to have the original bits to be sure it will run properly.
Dont know if Megasquirt could be used on that engine but may be an option.
