Water pumps...

Real daft quick question:

I've got a 1.6 Zetec SE (Ford Focus 2001) and the water pump seems a bit stiff to me. The system is fully drained and the pump is dry, so should it spin freely?
If I remove the pump from the block then it spins fine so the bearings seem ok, but something seems to be rubbing when it's bolted back onto the engine. There aren't any visible sign of rubbing on the pump internals or block though...

Any ideas?

Cheers,
Ed.

Id put some paint around the hole in the block to see if contact was being made.

Either that or somets not straight causing the pump housing to bend and locking the bearings

have you tried fitting it with a gasket ?? it must be catching if it tightens upon fitting

Ah - that may well be the problem. The gasket it's got is only thin metal, and is about 0.15mm thick... Looks like another trip to the Ford spares department then!

Thanks guys,
Ed.
