Damn Sump still leaking

Spent all last Sunday afternoon under the bloody car, fitted the gasket properly, or so I thought, front and rear rubber seals with a bit of sealant in the corners, gasket fitted and then the sump bolts done up in the correct sequence, fresh cheapo oil, ran engine for 20 minutes idling and then retorqued the bolts. Quick blast and put it away with newspaper under the sump, checked the following evening and not a drop Today, changed the oil for the expensive stuff and oil additive and stuck on a new filter for good measure. Quick blast about 20 miles and I've noticed spots on my garage floor again.

Will be re torquing them tomorrow but does this sound normal. If the re torquing doesn't sort it, its going to the garage to get done, haven't got all the gravel out of my back yet from last week.

Normal or unusual?

I've also seen some race spec gaskets which look like they are made out of compressed paper which can be clamped tighter apparently. Any good??

Cheers

Rich

You may of over tightened the bolts and cut the cork gasket
Is your sump twisted ? after welding it ?
Where is it leaking at the back could it be the crank oil seal ?

Is it definitely engine oil - not gearbox oil?

I don't have the luxury of a gasket on my Toyota engine. So I have to stick the windage plate on with sealant then the pan after that. If I do get a small leak I have simply put silicone sealant along the join and that has been enough to stop it in the past.

I have had leaks from the bolt holes.
Ran sealant round the bolt holes on the sump and all round the sump lip stuck the gasket on and left to set.
Cleaned the engine block sump face with spirit, dried it, coated with sealant again round the bolt holes and face and nipped up not to tight, leave to set.
Remove some bolts, coat head with sealant, nip up leave to half set, torque up.
I mad sure the crank seals were coated properly and the anoying little seal blocks were inserted properly when i fitted the rubber half moon seals. (Pinto)
Check your engine breathers, if you get sump pressure the oil will find its way out somewhere

Check first -

Is the replacement oil filter done up - sealed ?
Drain plug ditto

Are you sure it's not just spilled oil trickling down the block ?

I would have thought a cork gasket would give more compliance than a thinner paper one. Are you 100% sure it isnt off of oil seals a crack in the sump, dizzy seal or rocker cover etc and running down the engine.

So what would cause the filler cap to blow off and cover everything in oil?

Going to start mopping up the mess now

it not the crank seal thats leaking is it ?? Have you identified a point from where the drip is comming from. We had a problem on a Zetec oil leaking from 2 points on the sump as we thought . the actual problem teurned out to be a camshaft seal and oil was making its way around the block due to airflow when moving and from the fan. Changed the cam seals and job done

Schoolboy error? I filled the oil when it was on the drive, which has a slight gradient, so I could have put a little too much in it, I would have thought it would have blown the excess oil into my bottle which is nearly empty.

I've emptied the excess out which is 500ml

Mmmm, quite alot! Schoolboy error or senior moment?

Hopefully that all it was but can't take it for a run because of the snow, so laters...

On the positive side, my engine bay now looks like new

Cheers

Rich

Excess crankcase pressure, if your lucky it could be just a blocked breather if not it may be worn piston rings bores etc

I'm hoping its just because I over filled it with oil, what do we think? Possible? I checked the crankcase breather and its fine no blockage.

If bad news I'll just have to rag it until it dies then do the duratec conversion a bit earlier!

Cheers

Rich
