Fitting Pinto Sump Gasket

Hi,

I'm changing the sump on my pinto over to an RS2000 alloy sump and have a couple of questions:

1) What torque setting do I need for the sump bolts?

2) The sump gasket is made up of 4 parts (a U piece each end and then 2x side pieces). Do I need to put anything where they meet to ensure there is not a gap between them?

Thanks,

Mark.

I usedn some blue hylomar around it - too much, as it turned out, as the sump was stuck in place once I'd got the bolts out

the rubber pieces should join quite well with the cork - some hylomar around the join won't hurt tho.

Not sure about the torque - I did them up to tight with a 3/8th ratchet handle - there is a tightening sequence in the Haynes manual tho.

HTH

tighten them down in the same way you'd torque the head down and you can't go wrongas it'll even the load out. off the top of my head they only tighten down to around 20lb/ft which feels like nothing but be carefull with the cork gaskets as if you over tighten them they split the gasket clean in 2! trust me!

built a car, built a home, had a family. lost the family, lost the home, still got the car.

Cheers, I got the heavy duty one from Burtons which is more like cardboard material rather than cork as they said that the cork ones can split!

See if I can wreck this one!!

2.0 pinto sump bolt torque settings.

First stage 0.7 to 1.4 lb ft
second stage 4.4 to 5.7
Third stage 6 to 7.5

Looking at the manual the sequence shows it like this.

Staring after the gap for the pulley each end a & b bolts, tighten a then b, then a+1 and b+1, then a+2 then b+2 and all the way around.

I guess someone with more knowledge than me will confirm this as I'm just quoting out of the book.

Hope it helps.

Sounds right.

Use either hylomar or Loctite 5900 on the block and sump. Make sure you use plenty around the joints in the gasket, but dont go to mad.
