vaux engine and box?

After a bit of advice, i've got a Dutton Phaeton S1 with a 2.0 6 cylinder triumph lump. Its a pretty well built car (was built by an engineer so better than a lot of them) and goes reasonably well its some where around 110bhp and 120lb/ft with 4 speed box and overdrive. Rear axle is Ford, I have been told by other owners its from a mk2 Cortina. This winter i'm planning to strip it down and do a full rebuild. I'm currently trying to decide whether to ditch the engine and put something newer in.

I was thinking about an XE or possibly a newer ecotec lump as i'm on a budget and I can probably get one cheaper. Gearbox wise, a lot of people use a bell housing adaptor so they can use the ford type 9. I was wondering whether a carlton or manta box would bolt straight on to these engines? I'd need to get a custom prop anyway and a bell housing adaptor is about £180 from SBD.

I would be running the engine on carbs, are 40's too small to run a standard engine on as I can get hold of a pair of delortos for £30 at the moment! What else would I need to run it, some sort of aftermarket ignition?

Cheers in advance

Manta 1800 box will fit, but it's not the strongest thing and they are getting quite hard to find.

The box from an Omega will fit (R28 I think) as well, but they are pretty hefty lumps so you might have fun getting it inside your transmission tunnel.

any particular reason for going with the griffin rather than blue oval?
If on a budget then the zetec is possibly the cheapest option with a type 9. OK, a bit common (even my spitfire had that combo, as will the new version) But do-able for relatively little money.
And the car will handle a whole lot better when that 6 pot is out of it (and I do like my 6 pot triumphs)
Add to that a vitees OD box should fetch around £150, that would buy a zetec and type 9, you just need the carbs/injection and ignition.
I guess pinto even cheaper, run on a std dizzy and weber carb?
Just some thoughts

The Zetec has cheapness, compatibility with the standard type 9 bellhousing and relative lightness in it's favour. The 20XE has torque and power on it's side (a good bit more than the Zetec in standard form) and plenty more to be extracted with bolt on bits.

Zetec was my other thought, would twin 40's be ok on the 2.0 or too small? I can lay my hands on a pair of delortos for £30 atm!

had 40's on my 1800 zetec and no problem whatsoever, but the chokes would need to be 34mm

If they are the late emmission dellorto's they are very good, and usually just need the idle jets drilling to .60-0.65mm
BUT be warned, check them out with care first, seized screws ANYWHERE is very bad news and can mean the carbs are scrap......but if they all move easily then perfect!

I've just posted this via u2u to someone else, could be useful here. The first paragraph just refers to an ebay ad and also illustrates why you'll get more bang for buck from an XE

Hi X,

very little information to assess that advert but the fact he's fitted high comp pistons suggests hes had a play with the internals. these engines put out 150hp as standard which was purposefully restricted by the exhaust manifold. with a 2 inch exhaust system and chipped ecu these can sensibly make 170hp+ and if he has raised the compression i wouldn't be totally surprised if he was getting 186hp at the flywheel.

To get the engine running in a RWD application on carbs you need (this should be a complete list):

*megajolt/electronic ignition setup
*a manta/chopped and rewelded sump
*a custom bellhousing
*type 9 gearbox
*a different friction plate (use original vaux pressure place), clutch fork and release bearing (get from yukspeed)
*a spigot bush
*a custom manifold for the carbs
*a low pressure fuel system suitable for carbs
*cooling system
*an exhaust
*engine mounts

Also I'd recommend bike carbs over 45s!

let me know if you want to know anything else
