Redex / STP stuff ? snake oil or good stuff
Having passed the MOT I'm now doing the annual service on the LocoPan and wondered what the collective opinion is on stuff like Redex. The
engine is now 20 years old and of unknown mileage so I think it might be a bit coked. Can't be arsed to take the heads off and as much as I
ask the local hospital won't lend me an endoscopy for the afternoon (spoil sports ).
I'm wondering about sticking some redex down the old plug-holes and seeing what happens.
There is an internet theory that if you do this enough it stops smoking IE the 'orrible smoke that comes out is the "deposits"
rather than just what you get when you run your engine on a fuel other than gods own RON95.....

i had some of that redex stuff thats supposed to clean out your injectors and stuff, might have been a coincidence, but my fuel hose split soon after.
wouldn't use it myself

don't write OT on a new thread title, you're creating the topic, everything you write is very much ON topic!

Yes I have heard of a few cases where it seems to have removed some of the important bits of rubber and plastic parts.... (like the bits which hold
them together)...

ask yourself the following questions,
is there anything wrong with your engine - therefore do you NEED to do anything to it?
How much is the redex?
How much is a replacement engine?
Do you want to have to replace the engine?
What to do should become clear....

Redex has no effect when simply used as a fuel additive (good for freeing up sticky valves and rings though) but I have used
this stuff
with good results - it honestly seemed to make a difference to my twin turbo engine, making tickover smoother with more mid range power.

If you engine is 20 years old and the Redex does what it says on the tin then there is a good chance your pistons will sound like church bells and
your exhaust valves like a xylaphone.
The only time I used Redex was when the engine ran on due to coke build up on the pistons

Redex has been around for 80 years or so, it is harmless to engines.
(1) It will free sticky valves.
(2) If left to soak in the bores it will sometimes free stuck piston ring.
(3) It removes carbon & varnish deposits.

Looks like I won't bother then The engine sounds fine enough to me, I think one bank might need the valve's shimming but that's
about it other than a carb sync. I had a go the other day but hadn't got the Haynes book and forgot the offside screw adjuster! Not surprisingly
it proved rather difficult to get all four balanced using only 2 of the 3 adjustment screws. Doh!
I suppose what I want to do is just make the engine is as healthy as possible considering how easy it is to find the rev limiter (ie it's not
had an easy life since it became mine ).

Redex is fine as long as you follow the instructions.
I used it on my old 2.8 capri and the only problem i had after that was the gearbox. No, that wasnt the REDEX causing that problem, it was because it
ran dry of oil.
Kindest Regards,
Richard.

I've never found the slightest difference from using it.
My brother put gallons of the stuff in his mini to stop it running on and you could still park, have a cuppa and drive away afterwards without using
the starter!

How much is the redex?
At the moment, it is half price in Teco. I bought some and chucked it into the volvo when filling up iwth Tesco petrol. Now waiting for
the hoses to split. Time will tell if there is any difference....

I was sponsored here in Canada by Redex in the 60's, ran it in the engine gearbox and diff in an Anglebox, no bad effects.
If you just want to clean out the gunk in the engine, take a litre of oil out when ready to change the oil and put a litre of diesel in the engine,
let it idle for about 15-20 minutes, no load, no revs, then dump the oil and have a look what comes out.
Put new clean cheap oil in with a cheap filter and repeat the process. cleans a lot of crap out.
