SORTED!!! :) Fast revs after head rebuild and re-timing- help please.

OK so it a 1.8 K series with Caterham cams, vernier pulleys and TB's and emerald 3d ECU mapped for existing setup (though cam timing could be different now

After bending 16 valves after losing a timing belt I have rebuilt the head with new valves, seals etc. All I know about the cams is that they were from a Caterham supersport. Got a digital lift gauge and measured the lift at 8.8mm. The verniers had no marks transferred and dont kw the recommnded lift at TDC so took an average from some piper cam profiles and set it at 2.5mm. Checked by turning by hand and all was well, cranked over with no plugs in over to get the oil pressure up and after remembering to reconnect the engine earth she fired up first time.. However..

She immediately revved her nutsack off requiring an immediate switch off. Same again on another attempt. I cant check the throttle cable until tomorrow but hoping theres nothing more to it with the timing or ECU etc. Is this common and any knowledgeable suggestions to check would be most welcome.

Can you put standard camshaft pulleys on, and thus go back to standard ?

Also if revving to high, must mean air leak/butterflys open ??

I got some old cam pulleys and used the marks off them but using the the DTI gauge to measure the lift for both the valves and TDC didn't really need the marks. I'm almost 100% that the timing is good. Dont know if the valve lift at TDC is that critical to the problem or if a slight difference in the cam timing would mean much of a difference on the original map.

I'll check for air leaks tomorrow.

It's got compresion then

Could be an air leak. Have you left a pipe of the inlet manifold?

I'd have thought running and revving = good
Air leak / VAC hose not connected, or something simplish hopefully

Are you running the standard plenum, in which case do you have the IAC stepper connected? You can reset the stepper using the Emerald software IIRC.

No Mike its on bike carbs with ali manifold and rubbers. I'm off to the garage to check for leaks on rubbers, hoses, stuck butterflies etc.

I'll let you know.

Just been and checked what I can and nothing obvious like hoses off or throttle cable stuck. Butterflies are slightly open but not been altered from when running before the head went.

Heres the problem..

How can I check the manifold, rubbers etc for leake when I cant even run the engine as the revs are that high immediately on start up she would self destruct.

Now I'm stuck.

Just a thought... could to much valve lift at TDC cause it? if it was 1mm too would it have that dramatic an affect?

No guesses please as my limited knowledge I can manage to guess myself haha

Check the obvious first starting with throttle cable slack/sticking, jammed linkage etc. Any air leak bad enough to make the engine run that fast would be visible without running the engine ?

I had the same thing when I was running twin webers, I'd over tightened a linkage and they weren't returning to shut

YES!! I am a nob

What you are looking at is the jubilee clip screw that is cleverly positioned that when tightening the rubber onto the manifold it pressed onto the throttle linkage and opened it a bit.

Why is it the simple things that catch you out. Ah well all sorted and she sounds sweet if a little tappity until the oli gets around her a bit.
