re:starter motor...again
My saga in getting the correct starter motor for my type 9 and silvertop 1.8 zetec continues. I now have tiger supplied starter which is my 3rd one
ive tried. Its a LRS543 and seems right except the holes dont match the bellhousing.
Do i have a diesel bellhousing, are there different bellhousings, its all i can think it can be.
For info this is the second LRS543 ive had and both had the solonoid in different positions.
I dont know whether i can just drill in the right holes i need in the bellhousing??

I think I'd drill and tap new holes so long as the previous ones missed them completely and you can always go back to using the old holes if a
new starter comes up
What about going to a ford dealer and giving them the bellhousing part number so they can check as to what engine it belongs?

is that an 1.8 diesel bellhousing or a 2.3 ? (I'm guessing it would need to be the 1.8 one to fit the zetec, but I don't know how
different they are)

im sure that the bellhousing had 1.8 marked on it in yellow by the scrappy, so wonder if it was off a diesel, do they have different bell housings by
way of the starter only perhaps? I think i could re-drill the holes and miss the old ones

ive had a look at the number and it says T4B2B 829 D3J7A
The LRS543 has holes at centres of 80mm but the bellhousing has different centres for each hole, something like 60mm from th emiddle one to one and
the other 120mm approx from the centre one. Sadly I can see an engine coming out and a new bellhousing being purchased

just spoken to first motion gearboxes and they reckon i have a diesel type 9 which has a long input shaft and a longer bellhousing. So not only will it
have to come out but i have to get another unit and also all my engine fixing points will be in the wrong place, including my exhaust cut outs...it
just gets worse!!!!!!!! B$st%%d car

if you have to change to a 'normall' bellhousing you don't need to change anything else
all you need is a spacer between the bellhousing and the gearbox - and the best part is its already a stock part for caterhams
I think this is the one:
linky but I don'y think
you have to pay that much for one...
(have a search on here - I'm sure there are some old threads on this and the cheapest surce of the bits)

really!!!!!
I think that would cause a problem with the starter as the flywheel would be further away?

no that spacer is between the bellhousing and the gearbox (not the engine and bellhousing) so the flywheel and starter stay in the same place
it just means you can use a gearbox with a long input shaft on a 'short' bellhousing

oh...ive just ordered a recon gearbox!!!!!! I presume then that its only a longer input spline that is the difference between a disel and petrol
type 9?

there are a few different ratios depending on the what it was fitted to
but the only real difference when your fitting them is the long and short input shaft versions - if you've got a 'long' one you can
use any of the bellhousings (some with a spacer some without)
the long versions were used on the diesels and V6 cars - short ones on more or less everything else as far as I know
if you strip them right down you can even swap over the input shafts
with the likes of BGH you just ask them to re-build you it with which ever one you want
mine is a short input shaft one - I'll take a couple of sizes off it tomorrow when I'm in the garage

right here's some stuff that might help you workout what you've got
drawing of the normal 'short' type 9
my own 'short' bellhousing (measures about 7" so matches the above drawing)
