weber jets and valve spacing

Am having slight running issues with my xflow. Am putting it down to dirty or in balanced carbs or valve clearances. Any one know what jet size is best for a 1700 crossflow with 1300 head and 40dcoe webers?
Also after information on valve clearances for this set up and also plug gaps. Have a courtina haynes book but as the engine is no longer standard I'm dubious about using it.
Cheers.
Need her running smoothly for stoneleigh.
