1.8 to 2.1 pinto...
Hi All.
I recently bought a Locost with a 1.8 pinto fitted. I have tinkered since I have had it and sorted all the easy bits myself like suspension geometry
and all the little niggles it had. I am now thinking of upgrading to the 2.1 pinto and wondered what that would entail, and how easy/difficult it is?
Questions that spring to mind right now are
1, can the existing loom and cooling system in my Locost be used so it would be a straight transplant?
2, Will the change be worth it?
I know the 1.8 is the least tunable of all the pintos, and as I had envisaged doing some tuning and mods in my spare time I am keen to change it. If
the transplant is not reasonably easy then I will look at probably going the zetec route. How much harder would it be to swap a zetec into her? I am
looking for a quick easy option as I am a dad with limited time and do not want the car off the road for ages...
Thanks in advance guys...

What ignition and fuelling systems does it run at the moment?
There's little point in going to 2.1 on Webber/Dellorto 40s. You'll be able to get more out of the swap if you've got a megajolt or
similar ignition system, the standard dizzy is only good up to about 140hp apparently (with a standard cam you wont get near that with a 2.1).
Other than that it should (to my knowledge) just be unbolt the old one and drop the new one in, and reconnect everything

if you are a dad with limited time and a family to take car of, i wouldn't bother going down the zetec route, you'll have to change the
engine mounts, cooling system and remount the exhaust on the opposite side of the car.
with regards to the pinto change, yes you can use your existing loom and cooling system and yes you can run it on twin 40's but you
wouldn't see much difference in power. Ideally you want to run 45's on a 2.1 with a fast road cam, FR32 & FR 33 are popular choices
the cam kits from Kent for these are about £230. Again it would be worth improving the ignition system on it as well, as already mentioned megajolt
would prbably be your best bet.
Hope this helps

Thanks for the help! That is exactly what I wanted to hear, straight swap with minimal messing and then I can tweak and tune from there. Cheers.

I have fitted and fiddled with Pintos for a while now, every thing from standard 2.0L to my yet to be run in 2.1 Cossy rods RL31 cam etc. etc.
Bike carbs and Megajolt fitted.
If you need any information, fitting, mild cheap/easy bolt on tuning or mega let me know.
The 2.1 with simple bolt on bits can give an easy 130 bhp, do some serious engineering and money at it will see 170+

presure!
now i have the rattle and oil leak sorted i need another session with higher fuel presure and bigger injectors! should see 200 at the fly hopefully!
