Inspecting Gearbox for Wear

I'm helping my friend run his Caterham R300 this year.
One thing we wants to try and save money on is gearbox rebuilts so not flat shifting this year!

I'm happy to take the gearbox out of the car but currently I wouldn't know how to inspect the syncros for wear.
He noted a slight crunch from 4th to 3rd at the last race that cost him a bit of time.

Plan A is just to take the box out saving a load of specialist labour, then send the box for inspection.
Plan B how hard is it to inspect the syncros for wear and replace, what tools do you need. I believe its a quaife box in the R300.

Any tips greatfully received.
The box had a couple of rebuilds last year but still didn't change as silkly smooth as some of the other cars in the team.
