Hi
Type 9?
If so then before trying anything else, is there any significant left to right play in the gear lever when the cars in gear?
If so then replace the saddle clip (sometimes called rail clip) on the bottom of the gearlever.

If everything else checks out (i.e all other gears are ok) its a common synchro problem on the T9 box. Second gear gets a lot of stick on hard
acceleration.
Also what oil are you using in the box? Some oils make gear changes a pain unless the oil is nice and hot.

it gets worse as engine warms, just the standard recomended gear oil for type 9

Try something like Fuchs Syn 5
If its the synchro, try to double declutch, if you get it right it will go in easy.
Or do what most people do, pull harder on the lever and swear at it
