Silvertop & blacktop differences and suppliers?

Afternoon all,

I decided to commence serious work on the GTS over the weekend as it's been too long, and discovered that it wasn't turning over by hand - last time I did this was December when I took out the spark plugs and put a drop of oil in the bores to coat them and prep it for cover for the winter months.

After a few minutes with a 2 foot breaker bar on a socket, there was still no movement, so I decided to whip the head off my silvertop and investigate further. It seems that at least 2 of the bores are rusted solid, but two are fine. Which is a bit annoying, to say the least. I could rip it to pieces and give it an overbore etc. etc., but I don't know if I can really be bothered with all the hassle.

Friend of mine purchased a brand new blacktop middle of last year from somewhere in Norfolk for a very reasonable rate, but he can't find the receipt to tell me who it was.

But my question is this - if I decide to buy a new engine on a crate (for ease of mind), will the current shortened sump and oil pickup pick I've got on my silvertop fit on a blacktop? And if I remove the water pump I've got on the block, is that transferrable too?

Also, has anyone got suggestion as to where I can pick up a new zetec engine for not silly money? I don't need ancillaries, just the bare engine. I did think about getting one from an old runner for a few hundred quid, but don't want the hassle of stripping it down and checking all components and doing gaskets, seals, etc..... Or am I looking at this the wrong way?

Not the best start to the summer, but I'd rather discover it now than when I was nearly there.

The sump will swap over but you will need four 20mm spacers and some of the main cap bolts from silvertop.

The water pump will not change over and the outlet is a differant size. You will need to change the hose aswell as make up an idler for the alternator, new belt aswell.

I would just find another silvertop. Much less work.

Take a look in my archive, in the engine folder, there are pictures of a blacktop with a silvertop sump and windage tray fitted, also an idler made from a modern beetle alternator pulley.
