Duratec Clutch requirements
Been thinking about the clutch for the Duratec in the Indy Setup.
Do I really need one of these AP racing Heavy Duty jobs. I am just planning on throttle bodies with a standard 2litre Duratec, so 200bhp would be the
most I would see - I guess
I see a standard Clutch setup can be had for less than £100 and is quoted as good for 150bhp, where the AP HD setup is north of £300, but is good for
150bhp or competition use.
But surely these above figures are for a saloon type car not a kitcar with half the weight. Also, having never had any experience of Competition
clutches, will this make for a Heavy clutch feel (cable clutch), while making driving the car more tiresome. My wife would like to drive it
sometimes, so would be nice to have it docile when necessary.
Any experience with running "weaker" clutch setups ? Just that if I can save £200+ I would prefer it.

If you have the grip (i.e no wheelspin at peak engine torque) the torque transmitted through the clutch is the same irrespective of the weight of the
vehicle. And its that torque the clutch needs to resist. The difference is a lighter car has less momentum so will accelerate easier with the power
applied, and therefore accelerate faster....
180lbft is 180lbft at the flywheel irrespective of the weight of the car.
Long and short of it is, if you fit a heavier duty clutch from the start, its future proof when you want more power.
Otherwise a standard st150 clutch cover and pinto friction plate will be fine up to about 180-200bhp

My HD clutch friction plate from AP cost about £60+vat, and the HD RS turbo pressure plate cost £70 from ebay, so shouldnt cost £300
Duratec Engine is fitted, MS2 Extra V3 is assembled and tested, engine running, car now built. IVA passed 26/02/2016
