Exhaust design

I'm having a bit of a meltdown here - I just cant work out how to do the exhaust on my Mx5 V6 conversion
I have the manifolds in place , going into slip fit joints with flexi sections (all 2" but what to do next has me stumped - I wanted to do something similar to my Fury (and happen to have two spare small silencers) but it just aint gonna fit due to the power-plant-frame thingy

So..........join the two downpipes and go single pipe (but what dia ?) Or twin straight back to behind the diff then the two small box's ?

Any ideas ?

I believe you can run 2 entirely separate systems, some say a balance pipe joining the two is desirable.
If running 1 system the main pipe would be 3", you can get away with 2 1/2" but unless you have tuned primaries with matched collectors and specific lengths to the first silencer then really you are only designing the system to fit the chassis.

Balance pipe is required on V8's, should be soon after the collectors and 2/3rd the pipe diameter, and makes the car sound much better as the pulses are not even, the V8 burble.

(1-8-4-3-6-4-7-2) left, right, right, left, right, right, left, right.

Not needed on a six cylinder as the pulses are evenly spread down each bank,

(1-6-5-4-3-2) left, right, left right, left right

However a balance pipe anywhere after the collectors will make it sound better, again 2/3rd diameter or the car sounds like 2 x 3 cylinder engines depending upon where you stand unless directly between the exhausts

Regards Mark

It's still a V8. Just a bit of a special one.

Gor it.

Left, Right, Right, Left, Right. Left, Left, Right

The point being that on a normal V8 the pulses are uneven hence balance pipe required

Seeing that V8 miata exhaust made the decision for me - two near straight pipes with the silencers at the back , probably side-ways across the car .
Just gotta get some more pipe and bends........and find two suitable silencers at a sensible price , going this way means I can fit two box's 22" long and 7" diameter .

I started on the first pipe tonight , and nothing will be lower than the chassis rails , so looking good so far

I intend running two pipes to the back of my Sprite,as it'll be easier to sort out, although will obviously use much more tube. Link pipe somewhere at the front and then one to either rear corner.

I forgot to add that it will have a balance pipe , as far forward as is practical (on the Mx6 it is just a few inches after the manifolds)
I originally ran my Fury without a link , and the sound was awful to me - half a V6 in one ear is not the best engine note . With the link , it not only sounded better , but seemed to have a lot more torque as well .
