Fast idle and enging dying when stopping after long run

Hi there,

I wondered if anyone has any ideas on what could cause the following please?

The engine is a Fireblade 919cc.

Car starts up fine, idle speed is as expected floating around 1100rpm. The car runs ok but after a long journey down country roads say for about an hour, it has started to just die as approaching a roundabout/lights etc whilst braking and changing down gears. Not stalling, just dying. So completely dead when you come to a stop.

Most times the car will start up straight away, but the last time it appeared take a while as if starved of fuel. We checked the fuel filter and float bowls and there was fuel present. After leaving it for 10mins or so it started up. But we noticed that the idle speed had jumped up between 1400-1500rpm.

We managed the return journey home without it dying again, but noticed when we pulled up on the driveway that the idle speed was still around 1400-1500rpm.

We have a flatshifter fitted so adjusting the idle is not as simple as the original adjuster, plus I wasn't sure whether this would have a knock on effect on the start up idle which is normal every time of starting.

I have looked on the web and tried finding threads on here, but there appears to be many possibilities! Any help with basic checks would be very much appreciated.

Thanks all

Not sure if it's relevant, but my Locost at the IVA a few days ago was fine to start with, but once it had been fully warmed-up it would run-on when the ignition was switched off, then take a lot longer to start than normal. Revs were high-ish, so when I got it home I checked the timing and after some 'tune-by-ear' adjustment it runs much smoother and stops straight away, and starts much much easier.

I will eventually find out the exact timing needed for it but for now it seems to run sweet, temp sits nice and stable at around 90deg.

Hope that is some use, at least it's something to check.

It looks like the Midget is winning at the moment......

check the plugs for colour. might be running bit too rich, iv had it, was as simple as dirty air filter
also check fuel pump relay if fitted

Another possibility is the under bonnet temperatures are causing the fuel to vaporise in the fuel lines . I had to lag my exhaust manifold due to very similar symptoms, also had it on an old MG Midget years ago which was cured by fitting thicker insulating blocks between the carb and inlet manifold which allowed me to refit the heatshield left of when I fitted the LCB exhaust manifold.
