pinto distributor removal

Morning All.

Having gone over to mapped ignition, and happy that it is all ok. I am going to remove the distributor and blank off the hole that is left. Is there any reason or issues I may create by not having the distributor gear meshing in with the drive gear?? Cant see any issues but just want to check in case somebody has had a problem etc.

yes...big issue! The tail of the dizzy drives your oil pump!

The usual solution is to cut the dizzy in half leaving about 10mm or so above the block, and adding a bearing-cap to support the internal gear shaft end that has been cut short.

You've got to keep the gears meshed as the pulley-drive gear drives the dizzy gear which in turn drives the oil pump (the hex shaft in the tail of the dizzy joining to the oil pump)

I'm sure some photos of other's solution will follow...

I modded my old dizzy. Removed the internals within the ali body. Cut the main body down and filed it all smooth. Cut the shaft off just above the std bronze bush. Worked well. I may have fitted a cover over to hide the rotating bit - cant remember exactly now.

I think the solutions using new bearing allow you to end up with a better looking lower profile, but i opted for the locost way.

Please research this a bit more before doing it as it was a long time ago when i did mine.

I had a feeling that was the case, but not sure. Good to know though

It can also make a great place to mount the edis coilpack.
