Zetec Head Help
On him rpm gear changes I'm getting quite a serious puff of blue smoke. There is no obvious smoke under acceleration, just when I change
gear.
There's also nothing obvious if I coast down a hill either. The plugs are all oily too.
Various friends reckon stem seals or exhaust valve guides. I'm trying to get my hands on a zetec compression tester, but assuming my issue is
the head I'm after a bit of advice please.
I have a few options;
1 - Get my cylinder head reconditioned - £200
2 - Get my cylinder head reconditioned and flowed - £400
3 - Replace my silvertip head with a used blacktop head, but I'll have to meas around with pullies and not really know the condition- £200
4 - Fit an st170 head with vvt delete. This will mean an electric water pump and remap - £400ish
5 - fit an st170 head and retain the vvt. This will mean electric water pump, vvt controller and remap but should give very good gains - £500+?
Thoughts and opinions welcomed :-)

New set of seals about a tenner or so? there are gizmos about (eg some thick string and I expect other higher tech ideas)so it can all be done in
situ. Guess the cam belt will have to come off though.

You cannot put a blacktop or ST head on a silvertop block, they are different, silvertop - Hydraulic followers, Blacktop solid, so oilways are
completely different.
It could also be piston ring / bore wear.
Have you considered buying a complete Focus / Mondeo with a good engine you can drive & test, would probably work out cheaper than the recon
options....

Hi Pete, there are many many threads on passionford and turbosport where people are running silver top blocks with blacktop or st170 heads??
I'm not fitting an old engine, as I could end up in a similar position.

You can fit a black top head onto a silver top engine, we have done this a few times. Have to mess about with the cambelt.

Check your breathers - you need one from the block, and one from the can cover, open to atmosphere (filters are a good plan)

I have a camcover breather to a tank, although it was full LOL.
Where is the block breather please?
