HCS, Valencia, Kent, Crossflow

I have access to a 1.3 HCS engine out of an '90 escort, I looks just like a crossflow, its runs on unleaded and has a reputed 60BHP. Is it compatable with a type 9 with the usual spigot bearing trick, and is it tunable (60 BHP is not really enough!)perhaps using 1300 GT gear.
Next question, what is a valencia engine, I have a sneaky feeling that it is another name for the HCS, does anyone know for sure?

The Valencia is derived from the Kent engine, but you will probably find that fixtures and fittings will be subtly different.

I am fairly sure that the engine mounts are completely different.

I will let others say whether the gearbox will fit - but I would be surprised if it didn't.

The Valencia engine is a small "crossflow" type engine and was fitted to early Fiestas and Mk3 Escorts. It bears little resemblance to the Kent engine and really nothing is interchangeable.

The HCS came later, from about 88 with the mark 3 Fiesta, is similar to the Valencia but the easiest way to tell them apart is that the Valencia has a distributor and the HCS doesn't. The HCS is still fitted in the Ka.

The HCS is a compact little engine and is quite reliable but has little to offer in terms of power. You would be able to fit it to a T9 box.

I agree with david the HCS (high compression swirl)is not that tunable and to be honest was developed with lower emissions in mind.Stick with the 1300gt a lot easier to tune and get more bhp for your buck!

hcs/valencia/kent xflow

Hi Mark. personally I would opt for the kent Xflow every time. especially a little 1300 jobbie. the kent lump is much more tuneable especially when you think that you can up the compression ratio just by fitting 1100 pistons. the kent xflow block was the basis for all the original Lotus/Cosworth twin cam units right up to the mind blowing 2000 ALL alloy BDG lump, as used by all the original work escorts in their hayday. get the 1.3 properly tweeked and they will rev till the cows come home. (8000rpm before you start considering steel crank and cross drill big ends & mains) or you could consider going down the road that I took with a 1600 except that you would end up with 1340cc aprox. For details see engines/difference between dcom & dcoe/ dcoe economy (page 2) run that on your block & I would expect serious hp & torque, better fuel economy and in a locost serious FUN.

Dont do the Valencia/HCS engines. They are shite. Most of the engine internals on the earlier ones were made of chocolate and were rattling well by the time 20,000 miles were clocked up. Ford knew about the problem themselves; they even fitted the engines with rocker covers that were double skinned in an effort to quieten them down!
Also the engine mounting arrangements are totally different on the above engines compared to an Xflow. These engines do not have provision for mounts on the side of the block, originally held into the engine bay by a mount at the front (by the water pump) and the gearbox at the back. Not insermountable, but hassle all the same.
And finally, as has already been mentioned, virtually nothing will interchange between these engines and the Kent, which means no tuning goodies!
HTH Stu.

Chocolate engines ehh? I suppose at least you've got something to have a nibble on while you're waiting for the breakdown lorry.
