Megajolt

I have finally managed to fit and test my home built megajolt ignition.
I now need to map it somehow, the map I am running at present is a 130 hp crossflow map but my car is running a downdraught carb and i dont know what cam is fitted. It runs better than it did with the old fiesta distributor, but I am worried about having to much advance.I know that in theory I should be able to hear it pinking but in practice cannot hear anything apart from the exhaust.
Has anyone any suggestions on maximum safe advance to use , or how to decide on settings ?

Hi there, the instructions for mapping the megajolt does seem a Grey area doesn't it!

I'm sure you would be able to tell if it was pinking it is a very loud knocking noise and a lack of power as it does it.
If you genuinely cannot hear it then maybe you could tempory pack up the exhaust to quieten it.

I aren't sure on the specifics of the X-flow but have just mapped our Pinto with Fast Road Cam and Twin 40's.

Are you using the MAP sensor?

Ian

Top man

You should be able to blow me a chip some time soon....

Have you decided to run the Map sensor as it was designed or have you gone for Tps sensor insted...

Whats the top amount of advance you should run on an engine(say a zetec)

How easy is the megajolt to map? or even to load it with somebody elses map

Lots of question Im sorry but am very intrested in your progress as the megajolt project may have to be on again

And again good look with the project....

I am running with a Map sensor , my car has a downdraught carb ,so easy to get a map signal.I did however have to make a fuel trap to go in the vacuum line as i was getting petrol in the line to the map sensor.
I am going to build another unit with the tps conversion as i have a set of throttle bodys to fit later in the year, when i get around to building a megasquirt.
I will happily blow a chip for you if you require one let me know.
The maximium advance depends on a lot of factors, compression ratio, cam profile cylinder head design etc.The crossflow needs fairly large advance figures as the chamber in piston design is not very good for combustion, a newer design requires less advance.

it is very easy to load another map or modify an existing one the config software is a 10 x 10 map and you simply change the value in the desired box and upload to unit. There is another screen that shows real time revs and map info and another for configuring the programmable outputs, shift light and rev limiter.

We went with the MAP sensor with a take off tapped into every branch of the manifold and then joined 4-2-1 into the megajolt ( I have heard this can be done 4 - a common chamber/manifold and into the megajolt).

On the mechanics side i have no idea on the maximum advance 2be honest i think the pinto was 38deg max although we may be running more than this at extrememly low loads.

We loaded the 2D dizzy map and then After about 1/2hr of playing with the mapping while somebody else was driving i'd got the hang of it and was moving on to 3d mapping, patterns just seem 2 emerge and its so easy to adjust.
Just 1 deg adjustment at certain loads can stop pinking instantly.

Fuel trap.... sounds a good idea although it looked more like oil on ours!

Don't suppose u'd have a Picture or an explanation?

There in the region of £5 each from RS.
If your not in a hurry I can add a couple on to an order and cost will be cost plus postage. It will work out at about £11 for two.

I tried to buy one first but could not find anywhere that had one in stock and couldnt be bothered going to the scrapyard, although a ford with a carb on would have donated one and also apparently some rovers had them fitted to prevent oil in the ecu.
I made mine from a piece of tube 20mm id and about 30mm long i blanked both ends and then drilled two holes in one end to fit 3/16 brake pipe.I soldered two bits of pipe in , one going to the bottom and the other just in the top.
I connected the longer pipe to the manifold and shorter one to the map sensor.I am hoping any fuel will settle in the chamber and be drawn back by the vacuum, it is mounted vertically with the pipes at the top.

Im planning on ordering from Farnnells towards the end of next week or early the following week, and can flash the chips as soon as they arrive, so plan on towards the end of the month. If desperate let me know and i can probbably get a couple from RS but I think there slightly dearer and a bit more hassle to buy from .
