HELP!!! SVA next week

Guys took car out for a run at weekend.. (Sorry officer) prior to SVA next week. Car was running sweet as a baby.. 80mph

Suddenly cough splutter.... then real drop in power... then it gave up... Car started ok straight away but as soon as u touch acc... cough splut.. stop.
Once the engine has cooled down.... it runs as weet as a nut. Sits in garage and revs all day with no faults.
I suspected coil was too hot (Near rad house) so i moved it and took her out again for a trial. Bloody same agin after about a mile.
Worked on it last night.... ran for 1 hour with no hint of a problem. Seems to be only raising its head when hot and been running under load? Any help out there?

Info... I have upgraded the x-flow distributor and coil to a bosch mk4 escort (electronic) distributor but not a mk4 coil. the coil is a 12v one and i have given it a 12v feed. Would the fact that it is not an OE coil for this distibutor matter?

Cheers for now.. im of to panic a little more

One suggestion - unscrew the little electronics module (where the lead plugs in) off the side of the dizzy and clean up the mounting face. Then get some heatsink compound (Maplins sell it cheaply, or a local electronics shop/TV service place may have some), smear it on the mounting face and replace the module.

Before you do all this, touch the module when the engine's conked out (carefully!) - it should be no more than warm to the touch. Same goes for the coil, which should never get itself hot.

Otherwise, are your petrol lines getting too warm? Do you have an insulating washer between the inlet manifold and carb (in other words, is your carb getting too hot?)

Good luck...

David

One more thought!

Is your coil specifically for electronic ignition, or for points? The Bosch unit gives a much sharper disconnect to the coil primary winding, resulting in a far higher output. A coil designed for points would suffer badly (points give a disconnect that's 'spread out' by arcing and the capacitor, resulting in a lot milder hit on the coil). I can give you the Motocraft number of the coil I used in the same configuration, if that helps.

Is your fuel tank properly vented? Easily checked, if you remove the fuel filler cap when the problem occurs, and hear a hiss as you do so, you've got a problem

what is hot??

did you measure the temperature of the water???

what is hot??
keeps the shoke staying open??

to rich to lean??

electronics don't quit offten if they get to hot...

what you could do is also check if it sparks when it quits..???

same check could be if wants to start if you put your hand on the filter (an richer mixture..)

I had the same problem when I fitted a filter king. It would let enough fuel through in the garage, but after a mile it would cut out. As soon as I bypassed the filter it ran sweet. I have now changed the location of the filter. Just an idea.

Update

Looks like I've cured it guys.... mant thanks for the ideas.... they were of great help.
Finally cured the problem tonight but i am unsure as to which one of 2 actions solved it.
I bought a gas analyser and reset weber, I also bought a new set of HT leads.
Glad to say its running very well, so heres hoping.
Thanks again.... J
