SD1 gearbox
Stupid question but I have just been offered a gearbox out of a rover SD1.
I forgot to ask the seller if the SD1 was a V8 as I need the gearbox for a rover V8 engine.
Were all the SD1 cars V8's or do they all have the same gearbox anyway?
Any ideas and help welcome
Thanks Paul

I know thw 2600 SD1 was the same box as the 3500 but as said before not sure about the 2000.
I'm also led to believe TR7 had the same box but i'd ask the question on that one.

I think that most of the later SD1's were V8's but there were also 2000,2300,2600 petrol and 2400 diesel engines used. Even if the 2600
did use the same gearbox I'm pretty sure the bellhousing will be different and the bellhousings are quite rare.
Try to make sure you get the remote lever assembly and if possible get the clutch bits (release bearing and arm). If you are converting an auto-box
engine then you will need the clutch and flywheel too. My website has a number of pictures of the LT77 SD1 V8 gearbox if you want to try to identify
it visually. Just click the "www" button below and go into my Gallery.
Hope this helps,
Craig.

As well as bell housings etc. being different the ratios are not likley to be identical. The LT77 ratios from a diesel range rover and v8 range rover
are the same bar first gear which is lower in the diesels. Incedently its the same diesel as used in the SD1

Thanks for the help..
just been in touch with the person selling me the gearbox again and he confirms the engine is off a 3500 SD1 V8 so no problems.
Thanks again and the pics will help me confirm its identity.

Paul,
Take a look at the speedo sensor, it can either be mechanical (cable type) or electronic (electrical wires). The electronic type was from later cars
so might give you an idea of age. Ideally you want a later Vitesse type as these had improved bearings.
I paid £140 for my late Vitesse gearbox with bellhousing and remote but that was a good price so expect to pay slightly more normally.
Cheers,
Craig.
