Peugeot 406 Engine Identification

Further on from a post i made a while ago about a knackered peugeot 406 HDi engine, i now need to replace the engine, but i need to find out which engine is in it... the 90 bhp or the 110 bhp version.

Does anyone know a sure fire way of telling ?

Also, when i find out and swap the engines, would i need to swap ECU's, etc? ??

Thanks in advance!

Well i know theres a 110bhp 2.0L HDI engine and I know theres a 90 bhp 2.0L HDI engine.

The 2.2L might well be 110bhp, and i definately know its not a 2.2L

Plus my dad's got a 2.0L HDI 110bhp, but it's not here to look at and compare.

Was a reply to a reply, but it's gone!

Thanks ch1#1 i'll see if i can find an engine code on it.

Any ideas on the ECU ??? can it control another engine, or would it be security locked to a certain engine.

Or would it just have security for ignition, etc. meaning i can keep the original ecu

not too sure on the ecu
the last time i played with one it also controlled the shut off valve on the back of the diesel pump,

also some use this for the alarm system, so you may have to swap pumps if your going that way!
the engine code can be found
if you look to the left of the oil filler below the diesel injectors on the engine not the head i think !
not 100% on that but think so

One thing I do know is the engines in these are not cheap due to the demand from taxi drivers

There isn't one on top of the engine ???

But i thought it was only the older style 405's that had that ?

My dad's 406 HDi 110 doesn't have an intercooler on top of the engine ?????

Or am i missing something ?

Hi there

ECU for a 90 bhp will not work with a 110 bhp motor turbo, on the 110 bhp motor turbo is electronically regulated. Suppose you could use the type to suit and swap as necessary.

I have 10 + years of pug experience if you are stuck.

Well they found the V5 and it's a 90 bhp engine. So guess thats the engine i'll have to get for it. Save messing about.

I'm a bit wary of the cheaper ones. DIdn't notice the zero ratings tho !!!

Cheers, minordelay i'll keep that in mind. As long as i can use the 90 bhp ECU with any 90bhp engine thats all that matters,

Hi,

Peugeot use the engine code as part of the VIN digits 5,6 &7 IIRC.

Easier than searching for it on the engine block.

not directly related but beware they may be different if they do/don't have aircon, i had an earlier mech inj diesel 306 and had to replace the sump once, got one from a zantia but the aircon mounts and general shape were different.
