ST170 Sump
Does anyone actually understand the difference between the zetec engines. I have an st170 engine and I need to know if the dry sump system that pace
sell for the zetec will fit an st170. I have a shallow steel sump then an alloy baffled spacer that bolts to the cast iron block. The problem also
seems to be that this alloy section seems to have mounting holes for the gearbox and yet the pace dry sump doesn't seem to have any. I am
fitting a type 9. OOOOOO errrr I have a headache!

You won't use the sump holes to mount the Type 9 on any zetec.
As far as I understand it, all zetecs use fundamentally the same block (silver/blacktop differences aside) so shouldn't be an issue for you.
I'd expect the Focus RS and ST170 systems to be the same as for the Phase 3 blacktop. However, Pace should be able to advise.

What you described there sounds like what i have on my standard zetec.
Steves' right the ST170 is a Zetec block with a VVT Head.
I'd still check with pace to make sure though

To mate to a Type 9, you'll need to cut away most of that webbing as that is where the starter will want to sit...

I've a standard Titan Dry Sump pan knocking around in the garage if you're localish and want to measure it up...

PS Done about 1k road miles now with a Phase 3 zetec with self-baffled and shortened wet sump

Steve,
Where do you live?
Can you confirm that your phase 3 has an ally section down from the crank then a shallow steel sump. This is the layout of the ST170 motor. I took off
the steel part and there seems to be baffles in the ally bit which may mean I can use the engine as it is although part of the reason for the dry sump
was to improve ground clearance. Ref your titan pan.... do you want to sell it?
thanks

Reading (Berks)
Yep - has ali top and steel bottom - that's why I modded it myself (don't have tig for ali)
wrt Sump - no, don't want to sell it but if you call round the FF places advertising on the forums you can sometimes pick them up.
That's what I did and the pan cost me about £50. Got a pump somewhere I need to rebuild, too.
Those are upgrades for (if) when I go the turbo route, though

The link was great! I now know I have a phase 3 sump. Is it necessary to further baffle the sump on a phase 3. Maybe the dry sump route at this time
is a bit of an overkill.
thanks for all the help.

I have a black top zetec and went for the raceline wet sump (which is a good bit of kit and is proven in races).
The main difference for the sump between the series 1/2 and series 3's is that the windage tray forms part of the sump.
With a series 1/2 you can change the sump and the windage tray stays attached to the bottom of the engine. With a series 3 when you take the sump off
the windage tray is also removed.
Therefore if you replace this with a dry sump or alternative you will need to take this into account. With the Raceline sump they provide a windage
tray to fit into the new sump (which is well baffled). I assume that if you went to pace they would be able to provide the same.
