RV8 & box on ebay.

I quite fancy this:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/V8-ENGINE-BOX-KIT-CAR-CAPRI-ROVER-PERFORMANCE_W0QQitemZ4589621574QQcategoryZ27382QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I know it could be a waste of money, but how much money do you think its worth?

Thanks, David.

I sold the same sort of thing and the buy it now price was £250 and it went. Bellhousings alone are going for around £70. plus this one has an oil cooler that mine didn't.

The engine number would suggest it came from a P6 not an SD1 (http://www.capriracing.co.uk/RoverV8EngineNumbers.htm) but I'm not sure on that.

The compression ratio also suggests that to me.

Cheers,
Dave.

I emailed the guy, he seems a genuine type. Someone has told him its from a P6 (73-77) but it seems unlikely.

Let the bidding war begin!

Wish I hadn't typed "but it seems unlikely", I may have sounded intelligent.

Hi,
By the looks of it, it is an old Rover P6 engine. These were around before the SD1 (1967-1976 I think) so it is pretty old. Things to be aware of with this engine are mainly that the crankshaft oil seals are of the "rope" type and tend to leak. Also, the oil pump isn't as good as the SD1 and needs to be in tip-top shape to give good pressure. The 10.5:1 compression ratio helps power compared to the SD1 engine but you may need to use fuel additives to avoid having to retard the ignition too far to prevent pinking. I also have a feeling that the P6 heads are less tolerant to unleaded fuel than the later SD1 heads but there is some debate on this.

On the positive, it is fitted with a P6 crank pulley (£45 worth) and a P6 water pump (£25) and it has a manual clutch/flywheel assembly (£80). The gearbox bellhousing alone can fetch £120 too as they are starting to get a bit rarer these days since most later V8's were automatic's. The gearbox might be worth anything from £0 to £100 or maybe more if it is the later R380 type. I doubt that it wil be though and is more likely to be the LT77 type. If it is a late LT77 gearbox it may have an electronic speedo sensor rather than a cable but the key thing with the LT77 is whether it is worn badly or not since they are well known for suffering wear.

Finally, just for comparison, I bought an SD1 engine (1977) in excellent condition (fully rebuilt 6000 miles ago) with all ancillaries and clutch master and slave cyl for £175 and I bought a good late LT77 gearbox from an SD1 Vitesse, again rebuilt recently, for £140 with bellhousing. I consider these purchases to be a very good deal and given that the above engine is a P6 unit I would say it is worth something like £175-200 if it is all in serviceable condition.

I hope this helps,
Craig.

ps. If you do go to inspect it before buying, try to get a look inside the rocker covers (4 pozidrive screws each side) as this will give you a good idea of engine condition. They are never pretty inside the rockers but it should still show signs of wetness from oil and should not be heavily caked with sooty black sludge. You might get some sludge in the corners where there is no "flow" of oil but if it is really manky and choked up then walk away.
