vx redtop plumbing mod

I have seen on another site , that if you dont run a heater on the vx redtop engine , there is a little mod that involves removing the coolant tube at the rear of the cylinder head with a pair of molegrips, and then thread the hole with a 1/2" BSP tapered tap, and then get a tapered brass plug from a plumbers merchants and use plumbers tape or threadlock to make a good seal.
I have just returned from my garage , having removed the said coolant pipe, but the diameter of the hole looks wider than 1/2", can anyone confirm the 1/2" BSP tapered tap is the correct one???
Before I go to the plumbers tomorrow!!
thanks in advance.
Greg

May be getting the wrong end of the stick, but why not just cap off the existing pipe ?

Cos it looks neater than capping. Sorry can't remember the size of the plug.

Pipe threads are a little confusing! 1/2" BSP does not refer to the dia of the threaded portion, like a bolt, but the nomonal bore size of pipe that particular size of connection can accomodate.
So in a nutshell the threaded portion will actally measure significantly larger than 1/2". A bit of Googling will probably find the necesssary measurements.

Tapping size for 1/2 BSP is 0.750" (19.05mm)

iirc its not threaded to start with, its a push in fitting for the heater output, so just turn down some ally plate to size and knock it in with some thread lock and it'll be fine, we've done this on race engines numerous times, its no different to fitting a core plug.

............but there are some that say it is not a good idea to cap it off anyway as it restricts coolant flow to the rear of the head..........SBD suggest it's not a good idea, and while I don;t necessarily think that he knows everything there is to know he does know more than me about XE plumbing!

vx plumbing

had the same problem my self. in the end my son came up with a good solution that also looks tidy. on the water pump of a peugeot 405 xu9 engine there is a rubber blanking cap that was perfect for the job and was also easily available from my local dealer

It is supposedly the case that blanking the heater output can create a 'hotspot' in the head, though I'm not sure I'm worried about it, I've seen many race engines, including swindons iirc that just blank the output. Race engines don't run for as long admittantly, but run with far higher stresses as they run full duty cycle for want of a better phrase ie flatout for the duration of the race and we often saw over the rev limit on down shifts upto about 8.2k! We've also boiled an engine or two such as loosing a coolant hose round thruxton and getting the wet and dry in the bores on the drill to get back out for the race the following day after! And what damage is a little heat in the head going to do? The cylinder is the most sensitive part to heat imho a lot of the time.
