Its usually a faily good sign that the mixture needs looking at.
I too have got lots of soot around the inside of the tail pipe from having too rich a mixture.
I'll clean it up and monitor it as the mixture settings have been looked into and hopefully sorted.
The tail pipe is a good indicator of how happy the engine is.

thanks mate,
think you are right as i have just recently bought the car from scoobyis2cool.
he said he was having trouble getting the engine to idle properly. Which it is still doing so ill need to get it checked out as im not too hot on
carbs.
( it drinks like a gooden as well )

Rolling road is the only way really, its running rich for sure and easy way to see is to check the plugs which will probably look the same as the end
of the exhaust.

Only thing i would add, is that most cars running unleaded seem to have sooty tailpipes
to a certain degree.

If the carb has an anti-run-on valve make sure it's connected to a +ve feed when the ignition is on. With the standard Weber carbs the engine
will run without this but it won't idle below about 1200 RPM and will need setting up super rich.
Now I figured that out I need to figure out how to get it to idle nice with a 3Kg flywheel...
