type of zetec ecu
hi, i have been offered an ecu from a xr3i, i wanted to know if the engine was a zetec and what engine size the car was. was told that the markings on
the ecu are, 1AFA EEC-IV, the seller is not 100% sure its from a zetec escort. does this mean anything to anyone? could i run a 1800 xr3i zetec with
this ecu? many thanks!

well i megasquirt would be nice, but i would have to spend over a hundred pounds on it, buy an ecu anyway so i can plug it in to my zetec loom and
then get it mapped and generally alot of hassle. i would much rather have a ecu i can wire in. it seems doable as long as the right ecu is used, can
anyone confirm if this ecu will be ok for use in a xr3i 1800 zetec?

If it is a stock ford item, I doubt you will be able to remap it easily (if at all).
I might be wrong.
Like CaLviNx says Megajolt/squirt it or find an ECU from the likes of emerald, omex etc on ebay
like:

you couldn't remap it yourself but a weber / alpha dealer could do it for you. (note ignition only unit)

i don't want to remap it, i want to get the right ecu so i can wire it up and start the engine! will prob megasquirt in the future when i can
afford too! i would want to do it properly if i used megasquirt, throttle bodies etc.

If you want to get it running on the cheap then you want an eec module from an old ford. Cost well I get them for £3.
The standard zetec ecu would be hard work and still limit power. To do that I would recommend having the full donor car and cutting the loom down bit
by bit until you can isolate a working engine management system.
If its from a mk5 escort xr3i then it has come from a 1.8l zetec.
if its come from a mk4 escort xr3i then you have no chance as the ignition was run by a dizzy anyway even if it was the latter efi model. Early (up to
1990) used the mechanical fuel injection.
I second the megajolt. yes its going to cost you circa £100 . But I reckon that’s money well spent...........imho

yeah tis a mk 5 escort engine so it won't have a dizzy. i guess i will have to try and find a decent ecu as i have managed to find the one i was
offered, was from a cvh car so no good anyways! will see what turns up!

yeah they are pretty useful pages! for engine mounts etc. but the "budget" induction is to strap webers on and get an ignition module.
this would cost more than megasquirt! i will try and wire up an ecu when i find one, have found a really useful page that allows me to work out what
engine and car an ecu is from, via its ref number.
