Diff oil colour

While checking the level in my diff (7" Ford LSD 3.62) I found quite a few filings on the filler plug and the oil seemed quite dark.
I have now drained the oil (sucked out via the filler hole) and refilled, but the old oil was quite black.
The diff was supposedly fully reconditioned and it's done 4000 miles since.
Should I seriously be considering opening it up to have a look or am I being paranoid (it's not that noisy, just whines a bit on a trailing throttle)?

James.

Someone once said that gearbox & diff oil is like 'the blood of Satan' coz it really is horrible stuff - black & gooey and the smell of it hangs around for weeks.

If your diff is not making any strange whiney noises (most probably demons) it is probably quite normal but worth changing to be on the safe side.

Extreme Pressure (EP) gear oil as used in spiral bevel gearsets like the sierra diff is normally a dark golden colour when new, but will go black very quickly, this is normal.

It does stink too, like rotten eggs.

I wouldn't worry too much, just use it and see what happens, they all tend to whine a bit on the overrun, recon ones usually more so as the setup procedure is rarely as good as ford achieved.

As a series 3 landy owner I feel quite qualified when I say that yes most things above are true you want either EP90 or hypoid there's a difference in the last numbers tho between 40 and 50 (50 iirc dissolves bronze bushes) and 40 does not....40 is hard to get hold of but most Agricultural supplies sell it for tractors etc. Do NOT use the red oil it is not an additive it is in fact the oil meant for automatic transmissions! It will bugger up your gearbox and diff but will seem better for a while....Its an old 2nd hand car sales man trick to disguise the synchromesh that doesn't work properly! Oli.

not just second hand car salesmen. I beleive it was a standard trick in old BL dealerships when people complained about the cold gearchange in one of the cars. They knew it would last longer than the warrenty and made the change better.

Cheers for the replies. I originally put in Castrol EP80W-90, which was goldy yellow, but I didn't know it changed colour after use (I understand engine oil going black due to the carbon deposits).
Refilled with Ford's EP90, so I'll see how it goes
