4th gear prob

Hi all

My clutch cable snapped at the pedal end on sunday, well it actually came away from the banjo fitting. I think the reason the cable snapped was the banjo was locked of solid with no available movement! But finally my question is when sat in the car i can get 1st 2nd 3rd and 5th gears but it will not go into 4th I am trying this with the engine turned of and no clutch is this a known problem??

Thanks in advance

Gary

Yea, don't worry about it!

4th gear engages in a totally different way to the rest, (just locks the input shaft to the mainshaft, no meshing gear is involved) and without the input shaft or output moving it prob won't go in. Roll the car a touch while trying and it will pop in.

True but in most cases its the selector pin got a bit bent and causes all sorts of minor selector probs.

Thanks for all of the quick reply's

It's a five speed type 9 box that i'm running i will try rolling it backwards and forwards tonight, I have got to take the engine out anyway as the input shaft seal is leaking.

Thanks

Hi if it's a five speed you need to be as gentle as possible on the down shifts to keep the syncros in one peice .

is it a brian hills box as he dose some nice mods to help them survive longer

Matt

What kind of job is it to fit a four speed box instead of the five speed i am running. also apart from weight is there any other benfits? If i did change i would have to put ballast in the car as i'm on the 615 limit.

Cheers

Yes, the 5 speed is heavier than the 4, it's also longer - so new propshaft, the input shaft is different - so new clutch plate and the gear lever comes out in a different place (further back on the 5 speed).
The ratios are different, the 4 speeder being more evenly spread and longer first - better suited to racing.
How many times do you use fifth in a race anyway?

I have difficulty selecting any gears when the car is stood without the engine running. If I yank it back into second it lines up the synchro and will go into first. The box is perfect when it's running and the oil is throwing round. I find 1st is sometimes redundant in the 5 speed box.

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

Hi dont worry about the wheight ballast can be put in to suit it only about 6kg lighter.
prop will be the same if you use the type 9 instead of the escort box.
you can do all the circuits with just the 4 speed and unless you have the (transit) 5th gear it's usless anyway.
Altho thruckston cant spell will be interesting this year as its all flatt out with 85hp acsept for the final corners.

also mount plate will need moving to suit whoes chassis have you got . I should know really you were close to us on the grid sunday.

cheers matt

it's a stuart taylor chassis, I've got the 5sp box in it at the moment and i've also got a spare 5spd box in the garage, what benefit would i get from changing to the 4spd as i'm quite happy with it at the moment just could do with my rev limiter raised a little got it set at 6800rpm.

Matt, You sure about using the same propshaft, I'm sure I read that the type 9 box was 3" longer than the 4 speeder?
