Andy why you rebuilding m8?

I’ve been down this route and don’t recommend it.

Most people will tell you that a zetec is good for unto 200k with regular oil and cam belts ect. Infact when doing mine at 75k I found no measurable ware. But still rebuilt it for the hell of it.

Cost wise you are looking at £300 min for parts alone from say Burton's. Ford quoted over £600 for bits alone and told me know one had ever asked for it before.

Unless you have problems with your donor engine my recommendations would be clean it paint it and enjoy it. If you kill it buy another engine. The 1.8 can be had for £50+ .

Edit.
The engine is the cheap bit its all the bits to fit it that cost the money. So if you trash the engine you just swap the bits over.

As for tuning unless you have access to a flow bench and know how to use it you won’t be able to improve it much. Just try and get good tolerances when rebuilding. For the biggest tuning gains you need to look at the induction/ignition and exhaust. And cams.

A set of 2l or 1.8l 130 spec cams carbs or throttle bodies and a good exhaust is going to up your motor from105-115 bhp to around 150-155 bhp.

The cost of this depends on how deep your pockets are

I agree. If its knackered buy a another one Its much cheaper than the parts to rebuild. Zetecs are good for 200k. I wish i hadnt bothered.. It cost me a fortune and that was with very good trade prices.

If you really want to rebuild it the 2 litres are cheaper for rings etc than the 1.8's. The mondeo haynes manual i have is very good for engine rebuilding.
