Pinto Sumps

I am now in the position where I should shorten the sump on my 1.6 pinto about 2 inches.

My question is, would an alloy sump from a RWD RS2000 be shorter, if so, how much, also would it fit a later Sierra Pinto.

Or would a Sierra Cosworth (2WD) sump be shorter that a standard tin sump, and would that fit?

Cheers in advance,

The Baron

Assuming it's the same as my 2.0....

It's difficult to lose more than about 1" from the pickup pipe so there's not much point taking more from the sump!

Anyway, you're 1.6 is already 1" shorter than the 2.0 so you should be ok.

HTH,
James

As far as i can remember the RS cast sump is a good mod for the Pinto. When i was looking into it the problem was that they were expensive. I ended up modifying my steel sump and it cost me no more than £15. It was a bit of a hassle getting it to seal and keeping the flange face flat but worked OK in the end.

i followed Mark Allansons model. It was posted on here again in the last 2 weeks so shouldnt be too far to find, or try a search.

To test for leaks i just filled it with water. At first it was obvious where the leaks were. At the end less so but leaving it overnight soon highlighted where the pin holes were (they didnt run out but a small corrosion spot was evident). After i was reasonably happy i cleaned it very thoroughly, applied some Wurth bond and seal over all seams and overpainted in smoothrite.
I made the base plate out of 3mm steel and tapered it up at the front so it didnt have a square edge exposed if i do happen to run over something on the road. Mooding your own also allows you to get inventive with internal baffles.

Only thing i havent sussed out yet is how much oil to put in it. I didnt modify the dipstick so use that as a guide only.

You should fill the sump to the max level on the dipstick as the crank will aerate the oil if you fill higher than this, if you want to allow for more oil put a "wing" on the sump to recover some volume.

I put a rs2000 sump on my 2 litre,I used it because it has a extra wing on the side to up the oil capacityand its shorter, the same depth as the bell housing. If you get one get the new pick up pipe with itand dipstick to match

sump

I chopped an inch off my sump and shortened the pickup pipe by inch also, instead of running a sump with wings to increase oil capacity, i run an oil cooler for the same reason.

When i reduced the sump depth i didnt remove the same amount off the pickup tube. I removed slightly less to make the pick up closer to the base of the sump. As with baffles this helps to keep the pickup submerged in the oil when driving hard.
Of course i will now be changing the oil and filter more frequently now to ensure the base of the sump is always free of debris.

Beware the oil cooler holds oil in the presure system all post pump. Adding oil coolers and longer pipe runs does not increase the available volume in the sump for the pump to work with. The idea of a sump is to keep the volume of oil available what ever the circumstances.
