Is fuel pipe ok for brake fluid??

Another quick question - as it says - is fuel pipe OK for brake fluid, specifically from the reservoir to the master cylinders (obviously not for anything from mc to brakes!)

Thanks!

Chris

we found that some tubing is very permeable to brake fluid - there is a special type you need

i wouldn't use fuel pipe

possible source
Rover 600 is one of the few production cars that use a remote resevoir with a flex hose connection to the master cylinder.

landrovers (series 2 i think) do as well.

I know a number of kit car companies do use fuel hose but I believe SVA has started to crack down on this.

you need the purple cotton braid hose from thinkauto - its the specific stuff that is brake fluid proof. other stuff will leak out eventually one way or another.

Having used fuel hose on a competition car or two I can state that fuel hose is not the thing for the job!

It doesn't really "leak", but the brake fluid trashes the pipe and seems to "sweat" out through it, eventually dripping and ruining paintwork.

I went to my local hydraulic factors and found identical stuff to what Think Auto sell but at a third of the price. It has a purple outer braid and a pretty blue core It even came with a copy of the spec for SVA - nice!

A couple of pictures on my archive of marked hoses from a Fiat Seicento. The longer one is p/n 46774776, 290mm long, and the other is p/n 46774775, 220mm long. Total cost £8.48 inc vat, took a couple of weeks to get.

If I had known I would have just bought 2 of the shorter ones, they are just the right length

Brilliant, thanks guys - I have got some fuel hose left over, but I'll try my local Pirtek for some.

Well if they are then they're gonna leak. And if they're not (and they're not marked as brake safe) then they're gonna fail SVA.

Sorry!

James
