XE rocker cover question
Hi all,
just had my XE rocker cover poweder coated (and it looks GREAT!), but where there is a plate screwed on the underside which is connected to the oil
breather pipe - its now full of rubbish which rattles when I shake the cover....
I guess the space is full of either grit from blasting or from oil which when baked in the powder coat oven has gone hard and flaked off...
Question is, should I remove the plate and clean out everything, and if so, what do I reseal it with?? Or should I just rinse it out with something???
I think I'm in favour of a proper clean - but as to what to seal it with... I've no idea!!
Thanks for any pearls of wisdom!
Chris

check the sbd website, there is a mod where you cut a lot of this away, unscrew the plate and remove any crap - ideally this would be done when its
blasted, cut down the plate and refit the small part thats left. i'll see if i can find the link

Thanks Ned...
Is that mod for when you're using throttle bodies? I'm hoping to use the standard inlet manifold and injectors... so was hoping to leave
he cam cover as standard.
What sealant do you reckon would be good to reseal the plate with (either the little bit after its been cut down, or the original one?)
Thanks
Chris

that mod is for making a transverse engine longitudual and needs to be done when fitting any XE into a front engine/rear wheel drive combo

The mod's worthwhile for an XE/LET in any orientation. Helps stabilise the idle and was done to all the Vxl BTCC engines.
No need to reseal the plate, but do use threadlock on the screws.

Does the standard plenum etc. fit under the Rush's bonnet ok? It's a big old lump of plastic...

Using standard XE got big problem with bonnet clearance....
SFI box is skipped, made my own. Still problems, do want some ground clearance.
About rockercovermod, here I have to have closed ventilation.
And with this a catchtank, can I skip the tank?
About crap in your rockercover, never

It will fit under the bonnet - just! You have to switch to a different airbox - the 'powercap', available from various sources. Also the
bonnet has to be the optioinal one with a little bulge in it.
OK - just to get this straight in my head - I should definately do this modification even if everything else is staying as standard - ie all the vent
pipes going into the plenum etc etc?? Wish SBD said something about this!
Chris
PS - found SBD's note on this is their 'forum' of FAQ's under modifications

There is another mod on that plate aswell which this one propbably replaces where u drill loads of holes in the plate to make it breath better. I did
it on my calibra and it made loads of difference.
As for the grit stuck under the plate make sure u clean it all out. Theres loads of ppl on cavweb and migweb that have had coated covers and just
fitted them straight on. 100 miles later the engines dead.

Thanks guys, spent most of the day cleaning out crud from under the plate in the rocker cover - got it all out in the end... and now its on the engine
and looks great!
Have left the plate as standard at the moment, but will alter it at some point....

Please do the mod NOW! Really, it needs to be done on even a standard motor, with whatever form of induction you bolt on the side (but does benefit
transverse installs too).
With a longitudinal installation if you leave it unmodifed you will spray fresh engine oil everywhere in minutes...
Mickbo - this mod is still worth doing with closed ventilation. It doesnt replace the catch tank, it stops oil getting thrown up the big breather at
the back of the block, and pushed out of the front one, which will go to your manifold (closed system), or catch tank (open system)
Dont just build it.....make it!

Hi all,
thanks for all the advice - I'm still not sure if anyone has done this mod with the standard induction system, and if so, which tubes to leave
attached to the cam/rocker cover and which to blank off... if anyone can help with that I would be very grateful!
Also does anyone know a powder coater that holds burgundy as standard, our local one doesn't and not surprisingly doesn't want to order in
a whole tub just for our plug cover... other option is the metal with the letters ground off, any ideas who to ask to do that??
Oh - and thought of something else - to get any traces of stuff out I was going to dishwasher the rocker cover - will that bugger up the powder
coating??
For Ned...
Chris
By the way there's a full set of pictures of the build at www.rushowners.co.uk under the gallery section, look at Chris and Sarah's build

Mickbo - all the 'external' breathers stay exactly as they are. A section of the plate on the underside of the rocker cover is cut out to
prevent oil being thrown out of the 'front' breather, and into the inlet manifold or catch tank.
Chris - as above, Leave all of the breathers connected as they are. The 'small' front one is usually plumbed to a 'blank' on
the front of the throttle body anyway for some reason - never really understood that.
You might find that the dishwasher may take any shine off the powder coating. However, if you get caught that will be the least of your worries!
Dont just build it.....make it!

Thanks guys....
more manual cleaning needed then! No worries with car dishwasher use here (SWMBO is building it as well!)
U2U with details of powder Ned...
We'll cut out the bit as shown then and leave the breathers as they are all connected to the throttle body...
Maybe have it started in a few days????
