Engine Temp 80 degrees OK??
Engine is a pinto 1.6 recon head, no expansion tanks and new temp sender and guage.
Seems to run around 80 deg C on normal driving but I've not seen it go over 85 (not driven it really hard yet just to SVA & back).
I'd like it to run hotter as standard say around 90 deg C.
Should I try or just leave it at 80 deg C where it seems to want to be.
I used to be apathetic but now I just don't care.

Most thermostats dont open until around 88degrees.
Sure your temp gauge is reading right?

Sounds like you have a 81 degree thermostat fitted

my 1.6 pinto always ran cool. as you say, around about 80 degrees. even with the fan unwired, it ran at around about 80 unless stood in traffic, and
even then not much hotter.
it had a standard thermostat in it, which iirc, as BT says, was an 81degrees one. might have to have a root round at work and see if i can find a
hotter opening temp one if it should run hotter.

Most egines had a variety of thermostats fitted. 80 C is probably a little better for power than 90. Should mean the engine bay is a little cooler,
the intake charge stays a little colder too. Although the heater won't work as well as it would at 90.

Thanks guys.
Ran it today and put the fan switch to max and it got up to 90 deg. Then I could hear it boiling up and the rad cap started to blow off.
I then turned the fan switch down to get it to cut in around 85 deg but it still seems happy to run around 80 so I'm fine with that as peeps
seem to agree 80 is OK.
Thats all with the bonnet off though which I think will need some more vents when fitted. And of course when I get on the road properly it might get
hotter
As for a heater???

Mine gets to 97deg before fan kicks in and cools to 94.
Bear in mind when getting advice of bods that sensors may be different. My dash shows temp from new ETB sender in the head (above dizzy location). Fan
switch is in radiator and subject to low water level at times.
On track my water climbed to over 107deg - i wasnt concerned at that. I set upper alarm to 130deg.
Oil got up to 105deg. Again no concern. Only problem is when stationary at higher temps i seem to get some fuel atomisation. When moving the car
flies.
I think its all a matter of getting used to youe set up and finding the base line and some experience.

Something is very wrong -- it shouldn't boil at 90c ----- normally a cars cooling system boils at 110c. It sugests to me the water isn't
circulating inside the block and a hot spot is forming --- have you got a by-pass hose fitted.
