Urgent: Anyone got a VW PD diesel engine manual?
Hi,
I have an urgent need to replace the water pump on my Seat Alhambra 1.9 TDI PD (2002 model) and since there is no Haynes manual produced for this car,
I was wondering if anyone out there has a manual from another PD diesel engined vehicle and could scan and email me the water pump replacement
procedure?
It seems a shame to have to buy a Haynes manual for a car I don't actually own just to replace the water pump as I've got enough Haynes
manuals for cars I HAVE owned over the years to fill a book case...
If anyone can help out I would be very much obliged as I need my car up and running again for Tuesday and don't want to screw up my engine by
making a hash of the pump replacement...
You can email me at:
waterpump@craig.chamberlain.name
Many thanks,
Craig.

Thanks, I'll give it a try if I can't get a scanned page elsewhere.
Craig.
[I've emailed someone on ebay who is advertising an Alhambra workshop DVD to ask if he will email me an extract covering the water pump
replacement if I was to buy his DVD. I offered to pay extra if he did so we will see what happens...]

I have done a few front of engine jobs on an Audi TDI (albeit nonPD, but theyre not that different). The main difference with yours is the engines
sideways.
Briefly, expansion cap off, pull the bottom rad hose (assuming the waterpump hasnt "bled the system already"!). The waterpump on these
cars is located in a big alloy accessories bracket on the side of the engine, the accessories brakcet has coolant stubs on it, and the waterpump is
just an impeller, front cover housing and a bearing that goes in the front. The bad news is that I suspect the timing belt may have to come off to get
the waterpump out, since I *think* its hidden/blanked off by the rear timing cover! Either way your gonna have to get the fanbelt off too, and the
Aircon belt (its its both the same as the AFN engine, and its got aircon).
Be careful when de-tensioning the fanbelt, cos mine has a left hand threaded aluminium bolt that you have to tweak with a spanner, and remove the belt
whilst holding the pressure on. If you give it too much of a tweak, the bloody bolt head shears off.
Once all of the shite is off the front of the engine, getting the pump off shouldnt be hard, its just an additional arse when youve got the inner wing
in the way all the time.
Well, I hope ive given you soem expectation of what to find, even if I cant help with the actual manual.
To be honest, you may be better off biting the bullet and buying the nearest Haynes manual you can, cos if you overtorque somethign or get something
wrong, it'll probably cost a LOT more than 15 quid to fix!!
Sorry I cant be of more help. I do know how you feel, ive been there!
Ed.
I-iii-iii-iii-ts ME!
Hurrah.

Thanks Ed, I think I will do what you suggest and get a Haynes manual for a Golf or something since at least then I can probably flog the manual on
ebay or Amazon afterwards and recover £10 or so.
Cheers,
Craig.

Hi Ned,
Thanks for offering to help but unfortunately Halfords gave me the wrong water pump so I couldn't do the job. I bought a Golf/Bora manual from
Halfords too but even it shows a totally different pump to the one they sold me. I got them to double check the part number but it came up the same.
The pump they have given me is suitable for VW diesel engines of the early 80's era which isn't much use on a PD engine!!
I'm hoping they will take back the manual as well, even though it is no longer wrapped in cellophane because there is not much point having a
manual when they can't supply the part I needed help to fit !
Not having much luck this week - Bought a set of brake pads, they were the wrong ones. Bought a thermostat, it wasn't faulty. Bought a water
pump, it was the wrong one. Bought a haynes manual for a car I didn't own, it was no use! And the worst thing is, I'm still going to need
to pay for the repair and a hire car to get back and forward to work!!
Oh well - c'est la vie!
Thanks anyway everyone,
Craig.
