RV8 cam shaft

Just about to place an order with RPI for a webber 500 kit and a new cam shaft. They have a choice of the following cams in their kits..

Piper 270/110

Piper 270/2

Piper 285

RP4, Optimax cam


Any one with a RV8 got any veiws on which one to opt for or other comments..

Was thinking about the 270/110

I'm sticking fuel injection and a couple of turbos on mine

You best bet would be to talk to them - let them know what it's going in and your expected useage (realistic - not trackdays everyday) and I'm sure they'll suggest most appropriate bits.

I got a Viper Hurricane from www.V8tuner.co.uk
Not so much extra BHP but more a case of no additional machining to be done to the head on the valve spring seats. Viper Typhoon was more power but head work for the springs.
I went for a combination of power and economy.

Dont forget... New Cam = NEW LIFTERS as well.
Or you will trash your nice new cam.
I fitted Rhoads Lifters which are a bit leaky (on purpose) ie they dont open fully at very low revs this helps with low down torque and economy. They then open up fully when the revs get up a bit. Only downside is they are a tiny bit noisier at tickover. No real problem there.

Having driven mine for a few miles to the Mot... Its bloody quick, so you dont need to do loads to the engine to make it go well. A std 3.5 RV8 will go like the clappers anyway
I have RV8 3.5L, webber 500 and hurricane cam. std LT77 box, 3.62 Diff, and 17" wheels... 1st gear is almost a waste of time... all wheel spin and revs!
So dont go too mad.. It will go well.

Check your Engine has a slant backwards, so the oil drains correctly in the engine and heads.
You may also need a 5 degree spacing plate to level up the carb, I have not done this yet.

Also look into a Phenolic Carb Spacer as well to help stop the dreaded poor starting when the engine is hot.

Insulate all fuel pipes near the engine and keep them away for heat sources. to stop fuel evaporation and air locks in the fuel pipe.

Its a good idea to drill a couple of holes through the block into the top of the cam valley to lubricate the cam chain and drain oil forwards.

I have tried various cams in the past, to be honest all you really need is a 3.9 efi cam, you can get cam kits for these for around £100, look in Landrover magazines etc.

RPI have a good reputation but are expensive... Why muck about with a Weber, second hand EFI is not expensive, the looms are completely seperate from the cars so all you need is switched live, perment live and an earth to run this.

I am running 3.5 bolted up to 3.9 hotwire efi and westie plenum.

Cam is a Viper Typhoon you can get a special set of springs so no machining required to head ( got details at home ) can recomend real steel as well who are also freindly and cheeper than RPI.

Running Rhodes lifters.

Another one to make sure you do on the rebuild is set the pre-load on the lifters by shimming the rocker posts corectly.

I have no nead for 1 gear either.

Future upgrades after macket ecu and spark so I went for EFI. Will be upgrading my block next winter I hope.
