I had similar trouble with 2.0 running 38DGAS. 2 main root causes.
1. Fuel pump pressure was too high (redtop) causing fuel to be forced past float. Regulator couldnt cope with the pusles of fuel from the pump even on lowest setting. Solved by using std mechanical pump and no regulator.
2. Timing was incorrectly set. Cant remember exactly what it was, but suffice to say it was a mile out. Set it correctly to approx 12deg at tick over and all was well (FR32cam fitted).

I did have a daft problem early on in the build whereby i had the firing order wrong.

I hope this give you some pointers.

Darren.

If it's running check:-

- ignition timing
- leaks on inlet manifold
- mixture too lean
- cam timing

If it won't run check:-

- ignition timing
- cam timing
- cam isn't 180 degrees out of phase

perhaps you should admit to your customer that these carbs are not your forte and recommend that they are set up on a rolling road?

Carb balance.

Had it once before on a car with twin dellortos on it. Until the balance was spot on it would cough and fart and shoot blue flames out of the exhaust on the overrun.

(Ideal for decellerating at bus stops)
