To wrap or not to wrap, that is the question...
Some long-time readers will remember that a while back I was complaining about a very loud pop, or even a bang, after turning off the engine. In the
end, the general opinion was that maybe I had an air leak in my exhaust manifold, or it was something to do with the fast road cam that I had recently
fitted.
As it was starting to get on my nerves I decided today to tear off the exhaust wrap and see if there was a leak. Couldn't see anything so I
started the engine to check whether I could feel any exhaust 'breeze' from around the joints. Still didn't find anything so took it
out for a blast (no bonnet!) to warm things up.
Came home, turned the ignition off... and no pop, Put the bonnet back on, took for a longer and more 'enthusiastic' blast, and still no
pop at the end. So now it looks like the wrap was keeping the manifold at such a high temperature that it was igniting any unburnt gasses after the
engine stopped.
Of course, the problem is that my under-bonnet temperatures are way higher than I would like, so I have to address this issue some other way.
How many people use exhaust wrap, and how many don't?
For those who don't, how do you cope with the excess heat?

We saw a Sylvia Striker last night with an ally shield to direct all the heat from the manifold out of the hole in the side of the bonnet, so any air
and heat passing through would be channeled out that way. Sempt a good idea.
Suppose the only trouble was it needed a bigger hole in the side which might look unsightly on anything other than a racer.
We've got some Silver reflective tape on the underside of bonnet above the exhaust but other than that nothing, have never noticed it being
excessively hot and out air intake does come through the bonnet so it wouldn't affect that.

Just leave it. My mini does after a good run. It throws a nice blue flame about a foot out the back. Scares the crap out of passers by too.

I use it, but knowing how hot the footwell gets (drivers side is open to engine compartment), I do wonder as to its effectiveness.
Gonna do a load of work starting in the next month which will include replacing side panels with ally, but these will be open at the rear (the
footwell will also be sealed). Also planning on ventilation for rad very near the rad itself, with either vents in the side panels and/or nosecone.
Will use wrap again, as new exhausts will be generating monstrous amounts of heat (well the pair of turbos will )

I wrapped mine fr two reasons. To reduce engine bay temps and also to hopefuly reduce the noise a little. I know it won't make loads of
difference but 98db is a hard target.
I am not sure of the difference the wrapping has made as I did it the same time as fitting an airbox and a new radiator.
It must help but I feel the cold air piped to the airbox is of more use. Certainly when stationary.
