Diff temperature
Hi all,
Getting a noise from the rear end when above 30-40ish on a light throttle or overrun. Disappears on acceleration. Sounds like a vibration/knocking
noise. Quite loud. Initial thoughts were a cv joint. Bit of play in the diff when you turn a wheel on axle stands.
Happened to touch the diff casing and it was hot!!
I know the obvious suggestion is to check the oil level and i intend to do so but does anyone have any other suggestions or had a similar problem??
Cheers, Rich.

A lot of the engine bay hot air goes up the tunnel and heats up the diff so that's normal.
A bit of noise is also normal as it's sloid mounted.
Mine makes nasty grinding noises and whines. Too much power and too many miles. I'm going to build a new one.
Are you a Mac user or a retard?

Thanks Andy,
I must admit that the tunnel skins do get hottish but the diff felt too hot to keep my hand on it. It is solid mounted which could explain a lot but
it's a bit embarrasing. When coasting to a halt as it's about to stop there is a clonk........clonk......clonk...clonk..clonk type sound.
Like a ball bouncing when you drop it. Does that make sense? any ideas anyone??
Rich.

My diff gets too hot to touch, just means you're driving it properly
The clonking could be the diff, can you feel any lumpiness when you turn a wheel ? Sometimes it can be masked by the weight of the wheel.

I was out yesterday in my Striker and yep my trans tunnel walls were getting almost too hot to touch. My diff has always run quite hot. I have
slackened the preload in the diff which seems to have lowered the temp but I do get the clonking when acceleration/braking at low speed. So may
tighten the diff up again.

That *does* sound like a dry, or possibly worn CV joint. My car went through a stage where I would get a similar noise when slowing down, or
accelerating sharply form slow speeds. I regreased the joints, and cured the problem...
Dont just build it.....make it!
