leaky distributor? (pinto....)

My indy seems to have sprung an oil leak somewhere around the distributor. I've got a 2.0 Pinto in, with the 1.6 ignition system. It looks like an internal distributor shaft seal has gone, because there is oil as high up as the vacuum advance mechanism.

Question is: is this common, and are these distributors easy to rebuild if they go wrong. Or should i just get another one?

O, a i will NOT just put a bike engine in ;-)

From what I remember its just a simple O ring seal,

Does it look dirty/perished or not to be seating properly?

They should only be pence from the local plumbing suppliers/DIY shop would be worth changing just for piece of mind.

(or the oil pump is driven from the bottom of the dizzy shaft it could be more serious and thats blown a seal maybe, hope not!)

It looks pretty good (well, it did when the engine went in two months ago). Is there just the O-ring, or are there other seals internally inside the distributor?

There might be internal ones thinking about it, that seal the rotating parts. The one I mentioned will be the seal between the Dizzy and the Engine block.

The Heynes manual not show anything

Not a lot of help i now, but i just cleaned my 1300 Xflow Distributor, prior to refitting in rebuilt engine. I did notice that there was a felt pad in the end of the distributor shaft under the rotay arm, could this be missing on yours allowing to much oil?

That felt pad's there to oil the points rotor. It helps it to open and close the points smoothly. Most dizzy's have a O ring or two on the shaft somewhere, so could be one's a bit manky.

Think you will find there are no seals inside the distributor . Probably down to worn bushes in the housing , better to get another distributor. It might be a good idea to check the crankcase breather , if thats blocked it will cause oil to leak from the weakest point
