Focus Zetec MK3 black top water pump
I'm having fun trying to find out what water pump I need for my Zetec conversion.
Let's be clear about this - the engine is:
- a Black Top
- a Mk3
- a "Focus" engine (but from a Mondeo)
- not the same as a silver top
Please don't just say "you need a pump from an 1800 Escort" - I've got one of those and it doesn't fit. And yes, the
water pipe on it is straight out, not angled.
The Mk3 Zetec has a remote water pump mounted in an aluminium housing, with the pulley offset to the exhaust side.
Does anybody do a reversed-fin impeller or pump for this setup?

Yes they do. I have one.
Sourced from a us formula ford zetec engine builder
Easier solution is just to fab an idler pulley to maintain the original belt pattern.

or easier option is to triangulate the belts with a MK2 fiesta alternator bracket! and he pump runs the right way!
Or even simpler like the other people and me do here on locost....is just leave it and forget about it, its a centrifugal pump (you can buy the
opposite internals) and use as normal but wrong way round, dont think anyone had had a over heating problem

Many thanks for all the replies, some very useful information there.
I like Stevebub's reversed impeller - got to be the simplest, most reliable solution, but maybe not the cheapest or quickest. And the impeller
is aluminium, a lot of websites are talking about the plakky ones being weak. I'm seriously considering one of these.
On the other hand, it would also be nice to run a stock pump so it can be replaced easily.
I think I'll try to see how difficult it is to get the 1800 Escort impeller off.
It's quite a bit bigger than the black-top one so can't be used directly.
But the vanes appear to be at about the same angle/pitch as the blacktop.
If so, a few minutes in the lathe will sort out the size difference.
Here's hoping.

I ran the stock pump reversed for about 1000 miles without issues.
Only replaced with the reverse impellor as I wanted as little hassle as possible on the Le Mans trip.

Impelling reading.
A little more examination of the parts over the weekend has ruled out fitting the 1800 Escort impeller to the Focus/Zetec water pump.
As well as being bigger, the impeller is mounted the other way up i.e. vanes towards the bearing.
If it's turned over to match the Focus installation, then the vanes run the same way as the Focus ones.
Ho hum. Looks like an idler wheel for me then.....

The real problem with running the pump "the wrong way round" is that at high revs you will get cavitation which in turn will give you air
locks and then overheating. The 1800 water pump only works on the phase 1&2 engines.
Have a look on
http://www.zetec-cat.co.uk/
there is some useful info on there. Paul built his Tiger Cat with a Phase 1/2 engine then installed a brand new phase 3 engine once the car was on
the road.
