Help needed please
Just been out for a little spin in the car. Was on the slow down through the village adn the temp gauge was slowly coming down. Rolled onto the drive
and was sat with the engine running and the fan on. Again waiting for the temp to lower so I could turn it off with out the collant blowing out. THEN
heard a nice bang and steam pooing out of the engine bay. Obviously turned it off immediately and lifted the bonnet to find the top hose blown off.
First question is how did this happen? I thought the rad cap should open and release excess pressure?
econd qustion, any one know of any ways of stopping it happening again? Or is it just a case of improving the cooling and putting it all back
together?

If it wasn't actualy overheating then possibly a hose clip not tighened enough, or deteriortaed coolant hose that has gone soft?

Just checked a few things now it's a little cooler. It would appear the top hose isn't actually big enough to fit on the rad properly!
Does anyone know of somewhere I can get a hose step/er? Ie a bit of hose that has a step or something like a bit of copper/ally pipe with a step in
it?
Also, anyone got any pics/diagrams of how a bird should be plumbed in? Just want to check the hoses are in the right place.

Sounds like a loose clip on the hose, but you should check that the thermostat is opening and that there isn't an airlock in the system, because
the heat staying high is not a good sign.
I wouldn't suspect a headgasket problem, but a trip to a garage with a pressure tester, might be worth doing if it happens again.

Good to see you have found the problem. Convoluted hose is the way to go as it is made to join two different pipe sizes.
The only people I can suggest (off the top of my head) is merlin motorsport, but probably rally design have the same stuff.
You can also get silicone hoses with step down diameters.

Cheers Martin!
I just hope that this is the last of the issues I have with this car! I love driving it, but am getting a little irked at fixing it every other
weekend! First having to make a new clutch rod and spacer, and now this! Just glad they are both easy things to sort.
Any one know about the plumbing diagram?

'Tis true Calvin. There are many a little thing with the car that I'd like to re-do, but I'll end up building another car! I also
want to change to a full cage at some point, considering re-wiring, need to re-grease the prop joints already........
Just as well I like playing with cars!

Think Halfords sell (corugated or however its spelt) rad pipe with different sized ends.
Maybe a little overpriced but easy to get hold of to sort the problem.

Probabley a silly question, but are the ends of the pipes, (metal), belled out, its very unusual for a hose to come of, if the clip is tight, over the
raised part. Regards Ray.

The plastic part of the rad is belled/ridged, but the hose wasn't pushed on quite far enough to prevent it pulling off. The jubilee clip was
sitting half on/half off the bell.

i too have blown a hose (i bust it along the length though!), i believe that not all expansion cap tanks are actually pressure caps. Nowadays i dont
use a fan, and just turn the engine off if it gets warm.
The stuff halfords sell is called vulcoflex, and is usually £10-£12 per length. Not all sizes are available though. I made a reducer out of copper
pipes. For a 35mm hose, i used a 25-32 yorkshire adapter, and them put the hose over the ridge on the fitting, whick nicely took up the difference in
size.
I also once soldered a yorkshire fitting inside a larger pipe, and just used a lot of solder. It has lasted quite some time now.

Being from down south (well the midlands), what's a yorkshire adapter?

Yorkshire fittings are copper bends, connectors, reducers, etc. that have a bead pressed into them that is pre-filled with solder. Most, if not all
plumbers merchants stock then. Hope that helps. Regards Ray.

Have now fixed the problem. Also discovered thatwhen filling it back up again the engine takes about 25 mins at tickover to blow ALL the air bubbles
out. Was slightly suprised as after 20 mins the level droppped by about 1.5 L All is now well as the temp gauge only just started to move off the
stops even without the fan on! Oh, also discovered another reason for poo cooling at low speeds: the fan was wire to blow forwards and as such at slow
speeds there was no air at all going through the rad! Wires now changed round and I'm off to annoy the locals!
