What Type 9

Guys,

I am looking to replace my old type 9 box - any ideas on what the best ratios are when changing (Zetec with 4.11 live rear axle).

Also, who are good for type 9's at a reasonale price, what should I expect to spend??

Mark.

Not sure you get much choice on the ratios unless you spend a lot of money having one built for you. It's the diff ratio that normally gets changed to alter the gearing of the car to suit the engine.

There's a couple of people on here with Type 9's they want to shift. Try "ed-crouch" for starters, I know he had 2 of them for sale.

Thanks for the reply - I am looking to spend around £600 (if possible). I want to get a recon box that will last.

Try Tran X for a close ratio box, cheaper than Quaife.

How about BGH?
This should be his latest price list, but I'd ring to check

On the BGH what does it all mean (sorry for being thick).

There's: -

2.0 Long 1st
2.0 Sporting Close

2.8 Long 1st
2.8 Sporting Close

Cheers,

Mark.

The 2.0 has a shorter input shaft, measure yours, from the join of the bellhousing and gearbox to the end of the shaft. The 2.0 is 145mm long and the 2.8 is 177mm long. These are the main differences anyway.

Then the long 1st, refers to the longer first ratio, this is found in most boxes suitable for racing or road use.

The Sporting close will most likely have the short first gear and maybe closer ratios throughout, but you would have to check that. This box would be more suited to sprints as its a bit close for road use.

A recon box will set you back at least £300 not sure if you can get many different ratios using helical gears as the gear sets that quaife and BGH sell will be straight cut. You could find out what ratios all the boxes have and see if you could build something to suit.

Or you might be able to find a racer who is selling a decent box as they sometimes change to the 4-speed box.

BGH's are helical, and the sporting boxes have a longer 1st gear than the long 1st boxes, but then the rest of the ratios are closer together as well

Well I've seen the workshops, and he went on about how he doesn't do straight-cut any more, I just didn't know what the differences between the 2.0 and 2.8 boxes were, and the ratios are all on that link I posted earlier
