Erm, don't think it tells you anywhere in the Heynes other than to line the crank marks up with the marks on the pulleys and groves the rocker box.

This may be of some help,

I was looking for similar information for setting my 2nd hand Vernier pullies.

tdc as far as I know but if its for a critical job then you want a dial gauge down the plug hole on no 1 cyl anyway to get it spot on.

get the gauge set up with the engine as what you think is close to tdc, then wind it forward and back and "split the difference" on the gauge to find exact tdc.

hope that makes sense, if not u2u me and I will explain better

cheers

Nat

*If* the 16v engine is the same as the 8v's, then the front pulley timing mark is (IIRC) 5deg BTDC. However, even if it is TDC, it is best not to trust it, for various reasons. The front pulley has a rubber damper fitted, which can actually move with a few miles under the belt (and alter the positon of the mark), and the pointer itself can get bent.

However, as Nat says, the best way is a DTI gauge and a bit of patience.

Stu 16v and NS Dev! I'm back for just a bit - got bloody pneumonia. Left this forum some time back 'cos of the crap advice being dished out by internet experts and bar room mechanics and those who seem to keep quoting the "Haynes Manual"! That comment certainly didn't apply to you two though and I mean that. Youv'e done well to stick with them.

For what it's worth I agree with you both on this subject, as I knew I would. The pointer on the 2.0XE is for tdc. It may have moved a tad but unless he's fitting verniers he'll never know.
